Tyres - the cheaper options

If you want 7.50x16 for 100% off road use at a cheap price, try Custom Xtra Grips. They're made by several manufacturers (Rhoden, Goodyear, Olympic to name a few), used mainly by Conservation Forests & Land in Vic and on some military Land Rovers.

"Never pay retail for tyres" is what a tyre guy once told me. When I shopped for these tyres, prices varied from $140 - $200ea. They have excellent self cleaning properties and will claw themselves out of most ruts.

The link below has a pic of the tyres. I tried googling them and found it hard to find this time around. Last time I checked (when I was buying) there were a few local links. I don't know if this means they may not be available locally. When I ordered mine, they had to order them in, but that only took a couple of days.

DO NOT BUY REMOULDS!!!
Too much of a risk. The only things remoulds are good for are trailers, or as a slow speed offroad tyre that you do not mind destroying. I have seen too many remoulds delaminate and it does eventually happen to most of them. Ask a truck driver or firm why they generally only run them on their trailers and good tyres on the prime mover.
Not just the fact of them failing, consider one delaminating at high speed, if you stop the vehicle without having an accident, guaranteed you will have substantial guard damage. I gave a set to my father in law a few years back, Looked brand new and no signs of problems at all. At 100kph one delaminated and completely destroyed (ripped off) a trailer guard. Thank goodness I took them of my Nissan as soon as I bought it.
Some people swear by remoulds though.

I bought my 31x10.5 Dunlop MT1's fior $180 each from K-mart. I had orderd a set of Goodyear MT/R's and I got sick of waiting and opted for these, with chage over :D

A mate had a set of Savero Mt 265/75's on his Rangie, good value and cost him about $160 a tyre (trade price, he's a mechanic for K-Mart tyre and auto), but priced a set for myself for about $200 a tyre, cheap for a 16'. Kumho have a good muddie out now and the Maxxis is a good cheap option.

I put a set of Malaysian Sime Frontier A/T on my previous RR. Sime make most of the tyres in Malaysia e.g., Simex, Continental, Barum, Uniroyal and Dunlop. They were only about $130 each.

Awesome off road, bit noisy on road.

Try calling around the Kmart tyre places around you and see what they have going cheap. Last time I was looking tried this and was offered odd numbers of the same tyre at ridiculous prices from several shops within a couple of kilometres of each other. Kumho AT for $130-150. They had leftovers or over orders and wanted to get rid of them.

I had a set of Pirelli mud tyres. I found they had fantastic traction in the bush and also on the road, wet or dry but they were very noisy.
I also found that the carcass of every tyre was damaged in many places and when I looked at them closely I was not game to use them anymore even though they were only about 1/3rd worn. The tyre people I showed them to said it was something to do with the rubber compound of the carcass tearing instead of flexing when needed.
They were worthless as a trade in and I bought a new set of MTR's which seem to be holding up much better so far. I only swap from my road tyres when I go 4wding.
I also had a set of Pirelli Scorpion at's and I would not believe everything you read in the mags about them either. I had 3 with punctures through the tread bad enough that the tyres were useless. That was from logging roads that had been covered with a very course type of blue metal.

**** that's cheap for a 32' tyre. Who was the seller, one of the majors or a smaller one?
