    Slipping Handbrake

    Over the week I decided to finally change out the handbrake for a Rangie job. The drum looked oily with a small amount of seepage showing. I took it off and found the following. A small trace of oil from the hub spiggot coming from higher up on the left hand side. None from the centre. The felt seal was dry. The brake linings were oily.
    The oil looked like the original transfer box oil, light brown in colour. Strange, because I had changed to fully synthetic Castrol Syntrax 30K ago. That oil has a red colour to it. Could it be something else? or just some old oil that was trapped in a crevice?

    so...have you had oil leak onto the brake before.....?


    and is everything dry around the brake...?
    or do you have oil leaks around there.....?

    if you have oil leaks...you will need to degrease it all and drive it to determine
    where the leak is exactly.......



    as for the brake shoes...normally they should be replaced....but since its only the handbrake.....
    try to clean as much of the oil off as you can using plenty of brake cleaner.....
    maybe even heat them up in the oven to try and get the oil from in the lining.....it acts like a sponge......
    (best done when the missus is out shopping.....)
    but the brake cleaner should be good enough.....then clean the shoes with a bit of emery cloth.....
    and dont forget to clean the oil off the drum as well.....


    there really isnt any crevices that would trap oil unless you went pouring oil over everything....

    There is some oil (heavy film), on the outside of the drum assembly from the front side. I did not think that it could get in, but maybe thats where the problem lies. I have cleaned off the linings and given them a light sanding, also inside the brake drum. The outer drum and transfer case will get degreased tomorrow so I can attempt to track the leak.

    that would be the only way to attack the problem.....

    and the brake should be working again now.....

    what can be done to resurrect oil soaked linings or pads is a good soak in a solvent like brake cleaner, although I have used petrol, then remove and either set them on fire or use a blow lamp to boil the residue out. Works fine although I will add the caveat

    Thanks Rick. Once I have resolved the mystery of the oil I shall get a new set. keeping the brake linings and setting the car alight is not what I had in mind.

    oops, did I neglect to mention that you remove the linings from the vehicle first before, um, cleaning them.

    fact is.....once the oil gets into the linings.....you will never get it out.....
    setting them on fire and solvents and sanding etc..........
    will only clean the surface layer.......when they get hot....oil will work its way to the surface.....
    the only cure is replacement.......
    but since its only the handbrake.......its not as bad as if it were the main brakes.......

    but the above described procedure is used occaisonally but without 100% success.....
