TDi 1996 for $9990.00 Asking for trouble ?

    Hi All,

    Great forum here, very informative.

I had been looking for a TDi for a few months but gave up when a Land Rover dealer told me I wouldn't get a good one for under 15k. (my budget was 13k).

Yesterday I went past a small car yard with about 12 cars in it and one of them was a 1996 TDi Automatic. It has 196,00kms on the odometer and there is service stamps up until 140,000kms in 2002. It was getting dark so I didn't get to drive it but it started ok and a small puff of black smoke came out and then went clear. Apart from needing a really good clean and polish the wood grain panel around the gear lever was broken into 2 pieces.

The guy gave me the last owners name and address but they aren't in the phone book.

At that price am I asking for trouble or is it worthwhile getting a mechanical inspection ??.

What do you people think ??.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

    Phillip

Purchased a 110 a few months back for $6.5k with 237k on the clock and it's running brilliantly (for it's age). Everyone else was scared off since it din't have a/c and there was a big clonk coming from the back end. Cost another $500 to fix all the niggles (i.e. new half shafts) So as long as you're not expecting perfection and you budget for a few repairs, go fo it. If you're not confident on looking one over have someone go with you or pay a Landie specialist $100 to check it over. It the garage owner isn't keen then what's he hiding? ALWAYS look at it in daylight and get have a long test drive. Don't buy without trying a few others first to get a feel for what $10k gets you. Good luck.

Sounds good for the price. Just take it to a good LR (not factory) service centre and spend the $200 odd to get it inspected. If anything serious comes up hit the dealer for the inspection cost. At that price it leaves you a few grand to play with if anything goes wrong. Just remember oil changes every 5,000kms and oil and filters every 10,000kms. Use the best oil you can afford. Should do you for at least another 200,000kms. Just be aware as with any 10 yo vehicle you will have to spend some money on it. A dealer that reckons you would not get a tdi under $15k is a tosser. A mate of mine bought a 94 for $10k 2 years ago (prices a lot higher then) and it has not missed a beat. Maintenance is the key. Ask the dealer for the previous owners phone number or for them to ring them to authorise contact.
Good luck. I would love another Disco especially diesel Auto.

    Hi,

I would check the timing belt has had the modification. Should have been done, but at a cost of $1500 you'd want to be sure.

    cheers
