    Hiya Ray,

I run a Nera Worldphone for emergency use, great bit of kit. With sat phones, the expensive bit is buying the hardware, after that the call charges can be quite reasonable. Mine is on a "Pay-as-you-go" basis and I get charged US$1.75 per minute (That's cheaper than some roaming GSM calls).

Hiline - Give John Booth at Landwide Satellite Solutions a call on 1800 454 587

He's a good mate of mine and he's the CEO of Telstra's largest Iridium satellite airtime hire agency. Go to their website and you'll see their rates, and what call costs are (which should be similar if you owned one).

    http://www.landwide.com.au/hire_tels...sat_rental.asp

And he's a Land Rover nut - I bought my Defender from him, and he's about to purchase another. He used to rent them out fully kitted for touring.

    Cheers
    Chris

I have had a Tesltra phone for 4 years. Works well. I have also used this in an emergancy and I know for a fact you can still ring 112 (equivalent of 000) without putting the right PIN in to the SIM (ie blocking the phone). You don't think of things like PIN's when badly concused and bleeding.

In addition it is easy to store securely in the car and to use for general calls if required. It will also work in monsoonal rain, I got socking wet last Christmas trying to make a call in a remote area and trying to keep the phone dry - the car was too far away to bother getting to.

As for running costs I keep it on a base plan as I don't use it very often. It costs me less than $30/month for safety and I am out bush quiet often so its good to have.

I use a Telit 550 on Globalstar. I have it for work so I'm on a $100/mth plan which works out really good for me. It's Satellite/GSM, but I take out the SIM card and put it in a Nokia GSM phone when I'm in town coz the Telit looks really stupid hangin off my belt and people started asking me if I was on call with the SES!!

I've got an in-car kit, but the whole setup is quite expensive. I think it's be about $3-4,000 for the phone and car kit.

It works quite well and does the job for me.

Ray, Telstra Country Wide are giving $500 "Handset Subsidy"

To qualify, you must work, live or spend considerable time in a "no coverage area"

The link below has all the plans etc

    I hope this helps
