Yep, that's why I got mine. Check out ebay too, that's where I go mine from & I then contacted an Inmarsat service provider for the airtime.

    Mark.

The other alternative is an EPIRB for about $300. The downside is you can only transmit you location in an absolute emergency. If you do the sums the phone is say $30/month + the upfront purchase cost.
For me, having bought one and having had to use it for an emergency - yes, I could have also set of my EPIRB - its a no brainer, being able to talk to someone makes a huge difference and the phones are simple to use.

If you're traveling in remote regions I would recommend both SatPhone and EPIRB. There is nothing wrong with HF, but the mobile SatPhone will work away from the vehicle (or if the vehicle is wrecked). Also, unlike HF sets, most people know how to use a mobile phone and so can use it with out training.

The question becomes: What price do I put on my safety and those traveling with me?

Have a poke around the Marlec website too

    www.marlec.com.au

And do a search on Exploroz. The globalstar v iridium debate comes up regularly.

My Optus satphone has died again. This time I'm not repairing it. I think I'll replace it with Iridium. Not sure whether to get an account or do the swap-sim-card trick. Sods law says though that I'll damage the card, lose it, drop it, just when i need it.

And I do like the availability of incoming calls on the satphone. Even in the depths of the Watagans.

    Regards
    Max P
