Acetone is the way to go as it is basically a cleaning and self drying agent, so will dry quicly. Compressed air will quicken the drying.
I give mine a good wash out with Acetone.
THEN seal the top as much as possible and push compressed air through it, THEN leave in the sun for a couple of hours while I do the rest of the service.
Also heard that when you start it up leave the top hose off the motor for a few seconds to dry out.

THX, I used compressed air to make sure there is absolutely no residue.
Acetone is basically nail polish remover - so does a good job of removing all oils / varnish etc in and around the intercooler.

Acetone great I got about 20lts of it, I use 150ml every fill as a diesel additive.![]()
white spirit is also good, or you could use the stuff we use in refrigeration systems, R141b. No real flash point so it's safe, low boiling point so it evaporates quickly and removes oil like nobodies business, but i still use white spirit and blow through with dry nitrogen (cause I can) then hook a 2000w hair dryer up to one end and really make sure it's all gone.
I find the 300Tdi gets a very asthmatic in summer ( which is anything over 25 degrees C in Melbourne)
Goes great in the cooler weather.
Wonder if an intercooler clean out would help ??
dry it dry it, i did not dry mine enough started the engine and boy did it rev, quickly turned it off and it carried on screaming, stalled it dumping the clutch, dont think i caused any damaged but it sh*t me up with what could have been expensive mistake.
acetone.....where do you get it.....?
how much is needed to flush the cooler once....?
and how many flushes does it take to complete the job.....?

I used about 750ml to flush mine today, but that was overkill. I did it 3 times with about 250ml a time. Not too much crap in it. Acetone is available from most hardware supplies near the metho and turps or most labs will have some around.
As far as the Defender goes I found today that you can get the intercooler out without removing the radiator and I don not reckon it takes any longer, if anything quicker. Remove grill, fan shroud, metal surround (around grill), Bonnet striker and crossmember. Then remove cross bars. Then remove side plates that intercooler mounts to and intercooler hoses and remove. Will take some pics when putting back together in the morning. Dried with compressed air and will let dry overnight why I left it til 1730 to remove.

sounds too easy.....im good at pulling things appart.......
does it make any difference to the way the engine runs after a cleanout.....?
or is it more a case of preventative maintenance.....?
