I'm $260 poorer, I now have a new ACE pump, Free from Land Rover. And am still the proud owner of a Ticking Discovery.

    Apparently it's "Normal"

And the Whirring turned out not to be the ACE! So does anybody else have a howling something or other around the Alternator, aircon, ACE area of thier V8 DII???

Forget the ticking. I'm obviously insane!

Well, apparently the ticking is "Within the normal operating range of a Land Rover V8"

I'll have to get to the bottom of all this myself.

Nobody seems all that keen to fix my vehicle.

the whirring wouldnt simply be an idler pulley would it.....?

and can you give a better description of the ticking.....?
does it sound like a loose spark running around....injectors sound like this.....
have you tried unplugging the injectors one at a time like you would the ignition leads to check for a mis-fire.......?

just taking wild guesses here.......hard without actually hearing the noise....

    where abouts are you....?

Yes defenderzook the whirring does sound like a screaming pulley bearing or similar. Feels and sounds very dry.. also like there's a single bearing that's lost it's round and is sending high frequency vibrations though the engine.

And I was leaning in tonight and the ticking does sound a tad injectorish.. From the engine bay you can hear what sounds like a venturi noise, like a small electric switch going in and out on a single cylinder! It also feels a bit like there's a miss in the engine. Just a feel thing but it should be smooth as!

    I'm in Brisbane city! You?

    Yes still here in Brisvegas.

Going to check the pulleys at the weekend...

How do you disconnect each injector?

Is there a Haines for DII?? Or is it all rave CD's now or something.

theres gotta be a haines somewhere.....

each injector has a plug on the top of it.......
someone with a v8 might be able to take a pic for you.......

to check the idler pulley......just remove the belt and spin the pulley by hand......
if its noisy or feels rough.....replace it.....the bearing is shot.....

Everyone is probaly bored witgh this by now BUT!

I went over the V8 yesterday with a bit of dowell as a stethoscope (Brilliant if you haven't tried it) and I isolated the whirr to the ACE pump. More like a howl than a whirr and it's a new pump. So whatever, I just live with it.

But THAT TICK!!! You cannot hear anything like it in the engine bay. I listenned to every injector, every tappet, all the exhaust joints, anything that spun, oscillated or rotated. NOTHING. But as soon as you sit inside it is ticking! Sounds like it's comming from the back of the engine.. but there's nothing. That's it! I'm just living with it too.

BTW. The guy at Austral lied about taking the tappet covers off. They haven't been off in it's life and it's a big job so no wonder!!!
