Welcome to the ticking D2 4.0 club. I seem to remember someone else here with a D2 4.0 having valve seating problems causing symptoms you describe... which also sound like pinging to me.
Hi people. I have stumped Land rover technicians across the country.
The DII has a tick.
You can only hear it from within the cabin with the doors shut, but it is definitely engine related.
Sounds to me for all the world like a tappet or lifter but after about 8 visits to Alto and Austral and Purnel who have all had the engine covers off and seem to think otherwise.
They have replaced belts, oils, exhaust bits, Fuel injection bits, hoses and other stuff that I can't remember.......
....... and still it ticks.
I have been reliably assured it's not a slipped liner. These usually occur at the end game for an engine, typically in the 4.6 cos they have over bored the cylinder. 4L don't get the same trouble.
SO.... the $63000 question is if it isn't a tapppet, and it's in the engine, is rev related, you hear it loudest up hill in med revs, and is there hot cold and indifferent but is not too loud...
WHAT IS IT???
All help and suggestions appreciated.

A tiny exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold mating surfacce could be your source, good luck, Regards Frank.Originally Posted by 4X4V8
You need to wack it on someone like Graeme Coopers 4wheel dyno.
Then sequentially search the engine whilst its loaded up.
Did they check valve lift on each cylinder? Maybe:
- a damaged cam lobe.
- Exhaust leak (small)
- Valve recesion
- Sticky valve
Should be easy to find on a dyno.
Tombraider
do you hear it when stationary....?

I second that regarding a possible leaking exhaust manifold. I had a car that did the same thing, and it sounded exactly like hydraulic lifters. I only found out after I changed my noisy lifters and came across that problem. New exhaust studs, new gasket and a 300000km engine sounded like new.
Don't park it by a police station, train station, shopping complex or other places where people are. Someone might report that you have a b.o.b.

The sound is like a solid metal object whacking against the engine block.
This is the third opinion I have sought re liner problems.
Exhaust has been re gasketed. Checked.. found to be OK. As has some kind of external vavle?
All hoses checked for clearance, replaced.
They've had the tappet covers off, checked clearances. OK.
The noise is there when stationary. In Neutral, and in gear.
It's also rev related. IE increases with reves. Is exactly on one pot.
it sounds like a Stuck lifter. EXACTLY like a stuck lifter.
If it had a stuck lifter or vavle trouble would there be any other symptoms other than the noise. Like a missfire or smokey exhaust? It still goes like a train.
And as a plug for Land Rover, they are replacing my ACE pump. I just have to pay the Labour. After a year. Good on you LRA.
BTW. You don't get $63000 for finding it. But I will buy the winner a six pack of a beer of their choice.
I'm going to record a sample and try to post it up.
Have you done a compression test on all cylinders ?
No but I'm going to recommend they do one on Wednesday next week. Will keep you posted.
