    Wading plug/bolts for Disco

    Hi All,
Does anybody know what size the wading plugs/Bolts are for a 97 Disco TDi 300 & ZF Auto?

It feels like a fine thread, a bit bigger than 1/2" (or is that 12.5mm??)

Oh an idea of length and kind of bolt might be good too please (alloy, brass, mild steel, s/steel, HT etc etc ??)

It fits on the bottom of the bellhousing. Thought I had better "fill the hole" as Im getting into more and more mud.

I keep hearing about these plugs, are they important? I have been through rivers as deep as the bonet and I'm pretty sure I don't have any wading plugs fitted. How can I tell? Where can I get them and are they expensive? Can a simpleton like myself fit them?

You can pick up the correct size bolts from the local LR Dealer - sorry don't know the thread, size - but the material doesn't matter - you fit them before wading and remove them when you get home.

    See attached

    As per the owners manual

"Automatic's are completely sealed and there is no requirement to fit wading plugs"

Hi have you checked inside the flap of your tool kit to see if the plugs are there?

Wading plugs are required in the bell housing of manual transmissions on fenders and discos and there is also a plug hole at the bottom of the timing case cover on TDi engines. Any land rover parts supplier should be able to sell them to you. I never bother fitting one to mine, thats probably bad but i would forget to take it out. Matt

I bought mine years ago when I first read the car manual and it mentioned it in the wading section. Thought best to have them, but only ever put them in when I went to Fraser - thought I'm not in mud often.

If you're curious, I paid about $13 each. Yep, $26 for 2 little screws. Yep, I'll never forget the price as long as I live.

Mate thats what I first thought as far as I know there is only the tource convertor and ring gear....and there are seals on the auto shaft etc...so it souldent matter if a bit of mud or water gets in there .

    Tell me if Im wrong

As mentioned on auto's they are sealed - but there is a plug for the timing cover. Have a look at the PDF I attached to an earlier posting and it shows the positions/details.
