Koni Shock Absorber - need rebuild?

I just purchased some stuff that included a set of used Defender Koni adjustable shock absorbers.
I've worked out how to adjust them but the compression resistance is about 20% of the rebound rate.
They compress fairly easily so I assume they are due for a rebuild?

That’s about right for that type of shock. You really need to install them to see if they are performing well enough rather than doing it by hand.

You can't test them by hand. I had a set on my SIII LWB for well over a decade and decided I should adjust them up to be a bit firmer. After a lot of experimenting on the vehicle I set them back at their lowest setting (or perhaps half a turn, I forget) as that was the best ride and they may have not worn at all!
I have a set of very old yellow racing shocks from an Alfetta. A bit rusty on the outside but still seem fine to me. I have only kept them as they are too good to throw out and one day I'll find a use for a pair of them...
