    tyre question: toyo's on Defender

    G'day all,

    Has anyone had any experience with Toyo tyres? in particular the OPAT light Truck All terrain.

    they seem to be a slightly cheaper option, but are they any good?

    any info/thoughts/stories etc etc would be great

    I have Opats on a Rangie. Not the light truck version as i use them as my road tyres. The tyre retailers I spoke to said I would be impressed and they would out perform the Michelins I had before.
    I can only recommend them highly. They have excellent grip wet or dry on the road, are quiet are are wearing very well. They balanced well and are very airtight. This is the only set of tyres I can remember having where they lose no pressure at all. The pressures have stayed the same for 18 months. Look like they will last around 3 years, or 90-100,000 kms.

    Not the OPATs but ran a set of 31 x 10.50s on a Series 3 and they were excellent - got around 90k from them..

    I had 2 Toyo OPATs (not light truck) up until about 4 weeks ago. I had one puncture when the tyre was less than 5,000kms old (both the OPATS were on the rear with Michelin XPCs on the front). The intention was to have all OPATs eventually, but the on another subsequent camping trip, the other original OPAT got a small sidewall bulge - must have been from a rock.

    Pressure were not more than 34psi and it wasn't particularly nasty dirt roads either. The bulge is not a puncture, but it's not ideal to have a sidewall bulge. I drove like that for the last year, but now have 4 brand new BFG AT 245/70/16s. Can't give an opinion coz they've only been on 4 weeks.

    My OPATS always looked 'flat' and were thinner in the tread than the equivalent sized (235/70) Michelin XPCs. When I measured the tread width, it was like 1 or 2cm thinner - this just seems to be the design of them - but it resulted in a far large sidewall bulge than the Michelins or BFGs seem to have. I've got no idea if that increased the chances of my puncture and sidewall damage/bulge but I am now on the BFGs.

    Like I said, these are not Light Truck ones. They were 235/70/16 passenger ones. And I've still got them sitting on my alloys in the shed...only done about 20,000kms and tread is very deep still. I can take a photo of them to show you what I mean by the tread is not as wide as the XPCs...

    One day I'll get around to selling the alloys, so if you want 2 235/70/16 OPATS (one with small sidewall bulge, but both plenty of tread) then you can have them. But you'd have to organise the have them taken off the rims at your expense...the other 2 on the alloys are XPCs.

    Sorry for being long-winded, but I wanted to explain my experiences with them.

    Oh, and I found nothing wrong with them on the tar. Drove like I wanted to and never lost traction or anything...just was always worried about how 'flat' they always looked exposing a big belly of a sidewall.

    EDIT: Just noticed you have a defender, so my size is irrelevant to you...

    Thanks for the replys.....sounds like a few mixed results (like most tyres).

    Anyone else out there got any theories on Toyo's. Particularly the Light Truck All Terrains for a Defender.

    Dages??? are you out there, your thoughts would be good (log on).
