    LSD Vs Traction Control

Ok,, I (think I) understand how TC works,, it basically uses the ABS system to stop any spinning wheel, to make the open diff transfer power across the axel.

    correct so far?

Sooo-- if you add an LSD to the mix (say at the back) does this physically stop the TC from the need to operate?

or will the TC still try and work?

and if so,, does it work for or against the LSD?

    Hi Pedro
Traction control would actually help the TC,by locking the clutches up sooner. If you are going down that road you may as well put an air locker, mutch more traction supplied.

Yep LSDs & TC compliment one another.

LSDs come into play with both wheels on the deck, well before TC does. TC is really good when you lift a wheel, where the LSD is useless. And you lift a front wheel a lot, just look at DiscoDaves trip report today. There's one bank in the pics where I think everything lifted a passengers wheel. You'd never know from inside the car.

TC has a big tolerance before it comes in, I guess so it doesn't activate rurning corners around town. You really need to spin them up, or lift a wheel.

A LSD operates all the time. You wear the clutch type out on the tarmac, how quickly depends on how tightly they're done up.

Gear type LSDS would appear to last for ages.

Thinking about it, TC would help a gear type LSD when lifting a wheel. Truetracs have a 3:1 torque ratio from memory, Quaifes have 4:1. Lift a wheel, & the Quiafe will transfer 4 types the torque to the driven wheel. But 4 x 0 is 0. Add TC, i.e. give some load the lifted wheel, & 4 times would flow to the driven wheel. Much better than std TC, when TC can't always lock the lifted wheel.

There is a technique with LDS of lightly touching the brakes to get drive transferred to the driven wheel. Apparently its in the Hummer handbook. But TC would do this for you.

    Regards
    Max P

Charles from Haultech Has done lots of work with LSD in traction control. I have seen his classic rangie go places that would amaze most. Dam good set up. Easy on axles as there is a reduction in shock load to the axle.
