300tdi rear oil seal leak
I have replaced rear main oil seal but in a short time it was leaking as badly as the original seal. Does anyone know of a method of fitting the seal so that it doesn't leak? I think the problem stems from lack of fixing of the bottom of the seal retainer. Any thoughts on the subject?

The 300tdi can also leak past the 'T' seals on the rear main bearing cap.
Did you replace those while you were doing the rear main seal ?

300tdi rear oil seal leak
No I didn't replace the T seals but will be replacing the clutch and pressure plate shortly so will redo the job with T seals. Thankyou for that piece of info.

Were there any wear grooves (even the smallest) on the shaft will also cause leaks. A cheats way is to shorten the tension spring alittle on the seal.

Rear seal
A small question: Is the oil coming fron the wading plug or from the junction of the block to the trans adaptor and dripping down the outside of the trans adaptor?
If so, then I tend to agree with JandJ's assement of where the leak is coming from.
I too replaced the rear main seal (Whilst swapping a crank 2 years ago) and an identical problem sprang up. I know it isn't the t-seals ( which I replaced at the time with no problems). I would imagine that if it was the main seal, some oil would find it's way down the inside of the adaptor case and come out the wading plug hole.
That being the case - any other TDi owners replaced their RMOS lately - anything you did different to the manual?

A problem I encountered with this area was not so much with the seal but the gasket between the block and the seal carrier.
There is reputed to be a groove in this gasket, but it turned out the groove was poorly formed and the gasket didn't gasket! A replacement (after a proverbial mountain of bad language and a walk around the block to gather all the spanners I pitched away) with a smear of 3 Bond on both sides solved the problem.
When you get the thing to pieces, check carefully where the oil leak is tracking from.
