Question Series 3 (Lightweight) gearbox stay/steady/damper

    Hi All,
On my lightweight there’s a “stay” rod; a rubber-bushing damped threaded-end rod (1/4”?) running from the gearbox chassis cross-member to a plate that bolts to the bell housing with the same bolts that hold the clutch slave cylinder bleed pipe bracket. “504706 engine tie rod”. Is this also on other SIII models? Military ones? Installation- should in be under load in any direction?? Replaced the bushes, now re-installating.
    Cheers,
    Dave

Optional from Series 2 on. Seems to be fitted to most if not all military series Landrovers, and required for all fitted with the twin fanbelts and eight blade fan specified for stationary use (i.e. PTO use) to prevent the possibility of the fan hitting the radiator.

    So not all S3.

No preload on it, but it is not critical.

Ahha! Yes, understand now. Mines both military and was a twin-belt FFR, 24v etc. Would have spent a lot of time sitting around Norway with its engine going. No 8 bladed fan, probably could have done without a fan at all at some stages!

it stops the fan getting closer to radiator when you p[ull the handbrake on, which tends to pull the engine / trans forward.
I've fitted to all my Land Rovers, good to have if one or more of your engine mounts are broken.
