    Chirping noise in D2 TD5

My Disco has developed a short chirping noise at around 3000rpm under load/accelerating. lasts about 1/4 of a second.

Thought initially it was a slipping fanbelt, (similar sound) so removed the belt and inspected it to find it was in good nick, no flat/scuffed bits and the chirp was still there when the engine was revved without the belt in place. No rubber or obvious anomolies on the pulleys.

Fan turning smoothly without any play - not fouling radiator or shroud.

Turbo hoses and pipes inspected for holes and leaks - none found.

Noise seems to be coming from the front upper part of the engine, possibly under the tappet cover.

The vehicle has done 154k, and the timing belt was changed at around 80k.

The noise is mostnoticable when the engine is cold, but can be encountered when warm. Fluid levels are ok.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Discomania
Firstly there is no timing belt on the TD5,if somebody charged you to change it I would be paying them a visit with a cricket bat,the TD5 has a timing chain that self tensions and doesnt need replacing.
I wonder if what you are hearing is the wastgate opening when full boost is reached??? I heard a similar noise on mine whilst driving up some steep hills around Esperance, never heard it before or since,at the time I did the run several times to try and find the noise. At the time I put it down to the wastgate opening.

    Thanks Landy,

I'll chase it up. I've done a fair bit of towing with my TD5 and plenty of hills but the chirp is a recent addition to the repertoire.

There's no interruption to power or revs, it sounds like something briefly rubbing/slipping.

Check the exhaust manifold nuts & studs.
A slight exhaust leak will chirp initially & the Td5 is renown for breaking exhaust manifold studs.

My vote is with Stevo,, The chirping will most likely be the manifold
The symptoms are exactly what my bus first starting doing before it developed a noise under hard acceleration somewhere between a jet and a fart
While it was just a chirp I could not see anything obvious, but get a torch and mirror and have a good look around number 1 and 5 you will probably find a blow down there somewhere.

is the main problem just a case of mismatched metals not expanding at the same rate?

Never knew the chirp. So now I know my exhaust gasket was probably blown before I got it.
Discomania you are certain its not your aircon? Mine has taken up that habit every now and then.

I've got the same sort of noise on mine , but it mostly occurs when its cold. I sent it over to Techno Brittish in Brisbane, but they couldn't figure it out.

I will have to check out the exhaust manifold to see if thats the problem.

Have any of you guys got the chip upgrade as well? Maybe that is contributing? Or is this problem common on TD5s?

    Micka
