What about the heat shield on the inlet /exhaust manifold towards the rear of the engine bay. Found mine had developed a crack in the heat shield and it would move, causing a tinny sound. Took off the heat shield and repaired it with some metal mend, 12 months later still going strong.

You have to be careful Inc wrapping exhaust tube like they do on the Drag cars extractors apparently from the people who own Genie exhausts here in the west, there is a form of electrolysis which happens under the wrap and corrodes your metal pipe quick smart you end up with just wrap.
I was enquiring when I had the Rangie to wrap the extractors for efficency and to keep the cabin temp down. They said they wrap the drag car's for efficency but only get a few runs out of them before they corrode so its not cost effective for street cars.FYI

    Pom,
I was just about to ask exactly the same question on here, my 96 300tdi auto started doing the same thing a week or so ago. I was going to record the sound first so I could post the noise. I spoke to Brad at KLR in Penrith he said could be exaust leak or intercooler line leak. I am yet to have a good look.

Just thought to post up what the problem was. My exaust manifold had come loose. No spring washers installed, and it had 2 Manifold gaskets on it for some reason.
