98 300Tdi noise when cold and under load

    Folks,

This is also a newbie dumb*ss question.... but... I've just been on a longish mountain trip over the w/e.

My 98 300Tdi 110 has a fluttery noise (sorry that's the best way to describe it) when it it either very cold or under significant load. This is over an above the normal diesel rattle. When it warms up it goes away (until it's under uphill load). The sound doesn't occur when idling, breaking with gears, tootling around town etc. It appears to be coming from the front under the gearbox area somewhere.

So where should I start - does this sound like the exhaust blowing ? Or a turbo issue, or gearbox issue or is it just normal ?

    Thanks Pom

Try the manifold gasket/exhaust gasket leaking slightly, don't know much about these but I know the 110 Isuzu's when they leak it sounds like that or even slight "whisle". As everything heats up and exspands it takes up any v small gaps.

MMM, I have had a similar noise in both LR diesels Tdi and TD5 and it drives me nuts. Was part of the reason I got ride of the Disco so easily. The LR dealer could never find anything. The Disco used to do it at about 90kph and the Defender does it about85-100kph under load. It sounds like a little piece of tin or something flapping around in the tunnel area. Have not been able to find anything loose. More insulation around the tunnel so I can not hear it or turn the stereo up.
May or may not be the same, drives me nuts.

    Pom,
I was just about to ask exactly the same question on here, my 96 300tdi auto started doing the same thing a week or so ago. I was going to record the sound first so I could post the noise. I spoke to Brad at KLR in Penrith he said could be exaust leak or intercooler line leak. I am yet to have a good look.

Well folks, I've had my mechanic look at the exhaust system. And he tells me that all looks well. So back to square 1.....

I had a wierd noise when cold however it had nothing to do with engine temp just outside air temp.Treid everything finally changed the fuel filter cause it was all that was left, noise went away. Got no idea why, only thing i can think of is when the diesel is cold it may not flow quite as well and changeing the filter free'd it up again. When your engine warms up that may be just enough heat to allow the fuel to flow better especially as when it's under load it needs more fuel flow. Cheap thing to check though.

Oh dear, that sounds exactly like the noise I developed on this last trip. It sounded like a tin cover of something rattled loose from the tunnel area. If I had a diff guard I'd go straight there with a spanner. Had a quick look underneath - exhaust is solid all the supports tight. Hope it is found it really rattles sometime.

Fo me though it is a low revs and when coming off the throttle. Under load it is much better if not gone completely.

Its a Rover optional extra. Your lucky to have it for nothing. Usually they charge extra. I have only ever heard it in diesels, both tdi and TD5 never a V8. Go figure.
