    Thor has a rattle....

G'day guys. If you have been following this at all, I finally got the car back with the heads de-coked and new valve stem seales and lifters fitted in two stages. Stage one was getting the head sorted and after that the truck went beautifully and never pinged! You beaut I thought. Then when I stopped at the side of the road for a piddle a could hear a definate ticking noise. Took it back and got the lifters replaced. Now I seem to have what sounds like a ticking noise on occasion from the near side bank of rockers (only a soft tick) and when I accelerate gently from the traffic lights at about 2000 rpm I hear a bit of a rattle sound (sounds very similar to a ping). After first getting the car back and before getting the lifters done it was perfect, no pinging but sinse getting the lifters done it sounds like it pings a little and a faint tick fromn the tappetts can be heard. Normally a ticking of this scale would be ignored as it is that slight but thought it may help you guys suggest any faults. If you flatten the throttle you never get any pinging noise, just when it gently accelerates in about 2nd gear.
Any ideas what this could be? I'm sick of taking it back to the dealer even with it being covered under warranty but the bloody loan cars have cost me over $500 now.
Any help would be appreciated and passed onto the dealer as assistance as they seem to be having some problems with fixing this............

btw it is an 03 with 55k on the clock if that helps.

    cheers guys.

Its a manifold off job, but it may be that the tappets on the left bank do not have enough preload.
That is , the tappets with the valve fully closed should have some tension on them from the camshaft. The correct spec is 0.020 inch to 0.050 inch, but few mechanics check it. To check it a gauge has to be made up from a coathanger to fit between the circlip on the lifter and the plunger in the centre of the lifter, where the pushrod sits.
Maybe they fitted a head gasket which was slightly thicker than the original.

Thanks for the reply Phillip. How is the adjustment made? I have not seen the rockers and have been told they have no adjustment. Are there shims under the rocker shaft mounting brackets or something? Or is it a new cam job?

If you have too much preload you have to fit shims under the pedestals.
For too little as I guess with yours the bottoms of the rocker pedestals have to be skimmed a little.

Thanks for that. I am ****ed that an engine with only 55k on it needs all this. Oh well back to the dealer again for a few more days I expect.............

Well ****** first of all I love your handle it was my Nickname in the Army and is responsible for some funny situations/altercations..
With your car engine being so young doesn't detract from the fact its major components are based on a 50's Buick technology albeit good for its time and constantly added to its basically old school.. as for phillipA he would know more about the rover V8 than most as he is very knowledgable//Maybe with only 55k's on the clock contact triumprover spares in SA and go rolla rockers with new pushrods, lifters and a mild cam...sorry for the last part I was reminicising when I had my rangie with a worked 3.5lt Drag motor in her.

Well I picked the car up after yet another day at the dealer. He reckons he could not hear any pinging and nothing was wrong. I got 500 metres dowbn the road and heard it ping and when it idles there is an obvious tick, tick, tick, tick about 4 per second. Seems Land Rover are unable to hear this but if my wife can hear it I am amazed that a mechanic cant. The heads have been recond, new lifters. What else could it be, rockers and the cam? Does anybody know a dealer that knows what they are doing in Sydney? I am going to try and get LRA to let me take it to Bruce Davis but I expect that won't work out. 13 months this has been going on and cost me a small fortune in loan cars alone. What should I do? I have had this problem sinse I bought the car 13 months ago with 34000k's on it and the problem is still there.
