Now that would be awesome
Never heard of it done, but being a land rover it must be possible![]()
Hi all,
My bro is wanting to know if its possible to put a diesel engine (like a td5) in to a Rangie HSE. I know that theres a heap of factors that come into play, such as engine mounting points, electrics etc etc. He can get a rangie very cheap, but doesnt want to use petrol, so wants to know how much it would cost (if possible to do) to get it converted. Any ideas, opinions, criticisms, bright ideas etc etc welcomed.![]()
Cheers,
Carlos

Wasn't someone here (Jase maybe) putting a 2.8 Tdi into one?
2 and a half grand and he can bang it on LPG, gotta be loads easier..
A mechanic once told me you can do just about anything to any car, just depends how deep your pockets are. Just the thought of putting a TD5 in a rangie sounds way to expensive for me. Maybe a 300tdi would be cheaper and would give you less stress.
Though as said above a TD5 in a rangie would love to see that.![]()
I have seen two '90's Range Rovers with GM 6.2 litre diesel V8's installed. There are a number of after-market shops performing this sort of swap. The first one I looked at had a late Toyota transmission. Don't know about the other. What about an Isuzu 4BD1T ( turbocharged & intercooled). These were widely used in trucks and should be available from wreckers or Jap. engine importers. Get a wrecked County-Isuzu for donor parts.
The TD5 engine transplant would be just as easy as a tdi. What will give you problems is the drive by wire set up. The accelerator position sensor may give you some dramas. You would need to make sure you got a complete TD5 complete with wiring harnesses, ecu, the accelerator pedal and position sensor, as well as the little fuel reset button and suitable radiator. Plus fuel supply system .But hey if you can get a TD5 at a reasonable price and are not scared to strip the Rangie down to the chassis it could be done. A tdi with no electronics would be much simpler as it is just an engine transplant, no associated electronics to worry about - refer post by BigJohn. Would be much easier to just buy a TD5 Disco.

CraigE - Interesting post, at the start you say that the TD5 would be just as easy, at the end you say the Tdi would be much simpler...![]()

The engine transplant itself would be no harder itself. Work out wher on the chassis you need the mounts and bolt the engine in. The wiring and associated set up with the ecu, throttle position sensor would take a bit of thought and work though. The tdi is just a straight engine conversion, no real electronics etc.

What about the Gearbox ECU. They take readings from the engine ECU?
