R380 cross drilled gear thingamybob

When I was following through on my recent query on here re the TC Temp. Sensor on RAVE, I came across an exploded view of the case.

In it was listed a part shown as "Oil Feed Plate" but didn't look like my one, although I suppose a bit similar.
I wondered then, whether LR had used such a 'Steve Parker' type plate before replacing the cross drilled gear as an interim move, but I really don't know.
If you have RAVE why not have a shufti.

It's not shown in the WM anywhere.

As for the gear not coming out, mine did ok after rotating things a little, but be very careful, the thing will cut your fingers to pieces due to the worn edges etc, but you may have found this out already.:eek:

Check RAVE & things may become clearer. One thing I did notice was there are a few things with ** denoting, "If Fitted". The TC thermo sensor was one of those things. Seems some things are fitted & some are not.

I thought that might be getting in the way.

Anyway if anyone knows what the part is I described above then that would be good. I took photos of it with my phone but have no way of getting them off the phone. I might post them up on Friday.

Ok im in the same process as u mate but im doin a rangie with a lt77/230t what you have to do is remove the gasket off the back of the plate which is on the back of the t/case this plate is the bearing cap so to speak and it is held in place by 2 counter sunk flat head screws wich are a compleet bitch to un do have a look at my post on lt77/230t inpout gear mods and there is a pic of the exploded view of the t/case showing this cover and bearing cap hope ive pointed you in the rite direction mate

AFAIK the oil feed plate was bought out to improve lubrication of the input gear splines, before the input gear with longer splines and cross drilled lube holes.

Cross drilled gears are not available for earlier, suffix A or B LT230's (only for suffix C on later). The oil feed plate can be fitted to suffix A or B, LT230's.

AFAIK the temp sensor was only fitted to LT230's with v8's (but not early RRC).

OK guys I just looked through the RAVE CD for what must be the thousandth time and I just came across something under the LT230T Overhaul manual. It mentions the 'oil feed plate' as well as the countersunk screws holding the 'mainshaft input gear bearing housing'. So I was correct in thinking that this bearing housing has to come off too however I haven't seen the screws as it is such a PITA spot. Pity I have it all put back together now.

It also mentions that from 288709E there isn't any gaskets between things. They must have used silicon on the later ones. Mine is 28D311258E so in the later bracket.

The oil feed plate and the counter sunk screws are both listed as 'if fitted'. Guess mine has both.

Well since mine has an oil feed plate I'll look at it another day. It should be okay I guess.

The rear bearing carrier for the input gear is sandwiched between the main casing and the pto cover. This carrier must be removed before the input gear can be removed.

I've just undertaken an inspection on my late '93 Disco, 3.9 V8, LT77/LT230. Currently 233,000km. I was a little shocked at the state of the spline, but it explains why the Girlie is having a lot of trouble driving without clunks and bangs that make me ill.

Once everything was cleaned up and the vehicle set up with front axle on stands and rear on ground, I removed the PTO cover and the bearing guide plate. There was MONSTEROUS loctite on the six bolts, no gaskets but some old style Gasket Goo that made removal hard.

The gear itself was a little bit hard to remove. There was a heap of caked on gunge from the lack of lubrication that was plugging the end of the gear and shaft. I scratched out what I could with a screwdriver which freed the gear up on the shaft some more. While lying on my back I could kick the front wheels to rotate things a little - the transfer was still in HIGH but the gearbox was in neutral. The right combination of kicking and pulling allowed the gear to slide out of mesh with the transfer case and voila!

I plan to track down a new gear and put it in as a temporary fix. This Disco is a keeper at this stage because everthing else is great, so I anticipate doing the whole job some time down the track. But being between jobs is not the ideal time! I'll take some pics of the refit when I do it.

Clarkie, where did you track down your new gear again?

G'day macman i got my new gear from fourwheel drives in black burn melb for the measly sum of 185 o and u need new bearings and a seal that stops the oil runing out between the back of the g/box and t/case all up it cost me 300 bucks delivered to my door the gear you are holding is the same as the first one they sent me and was the wrong one as my box is in an 85 rangie and has the earlyer set up and the new one dosent come with the holes the gear omn the shaft comes in a few different widths and tooth numbers a 26 and a 28 tooth and either 32mm wide or 28 mm wide 4wds have em in stock and the new cross drilled nes have 4 holes drilled at a 90 deg pitch around the shaft in the flat ares were your birdy finger is in the pic your shaft and iner spline looks a lot beta than mine dose as its nearly round and has bugger all spline left and i have to replace the main shaft of the box so i got another box at the rite price and am guna swap boxes instead hope this helps and hagggel the price with 4wds as i did to get it at the 185 buck mark good luck mate

Those are great pictures thanks. I think my stumbling block all this time has been that I was unable to remove the bearing housing due to not seeing the two screws. Next time I get the inclination I'll have another look but not too worried due to finding out I have the oil feed plate.

Hope your rebuild goes well. I think owning a Disco is all about puting up with a few clunks but it is always good to minimise them when we can :)
