Check the crankshaft pulley for broken webs on the bolt-on section. If it breaks off completely then it will damage surrounding parts such as the radiator. If broken then better to remove it than leave it attached while another is sourced.
Hi guys, just wondering what causes the clatter?
It's intermittent and usually solved by giving the throttle a little blip - but comes back after a bit.
I've noticed the MAF reads 55 ish when she's quiet but gets up to around 60 when it's clattery. (idle)
TPS reads the same for both.
Cheers

I'd call it a clatter, It's not like a lifter tick or bearing. But the clatter does go away with a light throttle blip and will return after a min or so if left ideling.
The airflow @ idle reading does change after the blip. 60 = clatter, less than say 55 = a civilised noise level. (grams / stroke? on nanocom)
A blip usually totally eliminates the clatter. <- this is a constant. Airflow is always higher with the clatter.
The clatter continues until a bit higher in the rev range, once up to speed it's gone.
TPS voltage readings are the same for for clatter and quiet running. Idle speed is the same.
To me it's a fuelling issue or some such thing, not mechanical. IMO - But I'm a diesel beginner. Injectors?
I'm running a mildish tune, It did it before the tune as well on a totally different ecu
I'm running 10w 50 engine oil as a test - no change. Oil pressure is through the roof. I'll be going back to 5w30 / 40. The engine seems healthy and strong 270k on the clock
Mafless EU2 tune, EGR deleted, manual, snorkle, straight through exhaust.
K&N or standard filter made no diff.
Injectors aren't leaking, Absolute minimum blowby - I don't think she's even run in yet.
I haven't checked anything in the valve train, next weeks job

Was it making the clatter before the EGR was deleted? Mine clattered a little on or just above idle with EGR disabled.

Is it just diesel rattle that you're hearing?
I simply unplugged the EGR solenoid electrical connector on my '99 and also the ILT solenoid connector on my '03.

SupporterNot that it really matters, but the nanocom incorrectly reports the airflow on at least one of the info screens.
All airflow readings on a nanocom for a TD5 are in kg/hr not grams/second.

I couldn't do the maths anyway
If you've got time and dont mind, could you shed some light on the whole EGR delete thing with regards to tuning.
I've been reading up on the South African base maps that came out without EGR systems. Not that I could find all that much info.
Not asking for the revelation of any trade secrets or such, just some insight.
If the clatter is no issue, other than making ordering at a Hungry Jacks drive through a total PTSD inducing thing, I can live with it.
if it could be damaging to the engine, I'd like to know.
Cheers
