It may be scary but weight IS your biggest enemy and probably the single biggest factor in mechanical failures on long trips. Exceed that GVW (GVM) at your peril! Remember... I managed to do a 12mth trip, with a family of 4 and keep it within the limits.

About 15,000km's in those two trips alone without a chip.
Yeeeesssss... I was a little surprised when I saw how many sleepers can be stacked on the front roo-bar of a truck when we were in the Flinders last year!

    Guys

I have decided to run with the Silent Armours from Goodyear. Thankyou for the advice. Went to the local Goodyear rep and checked out tread pattern and depth. They reckon they are a lot quiter, with the new belting etc etc. All very helpful in a Defender, especially after putting up with Michelin O/R tyres.
Will report on performance after a few thousand kilometres.

    Cheers

I had simex extreme treckers on my 90 , same size as yours. went really well off road. But got chewed up . But thats was my fault not the tyres.
we a nightmare on the road . Got fun at about 140kph on the road in the wet. But off road they were fantastic.

If 90% of your travel is dry country I recomend the Pirelli scorpions or previous dakars. Got 90thou out of the last set, lots of gravel and only one puncture (tec screw in road house car park).
Hafto purchase two new ATs for the trip east and will sell of body parts to cover the cost.
