Have not heard of this, but anything is possible. If a Defender try behind the instrument cluster.
G'day all,
I believe I've read on here before about some later model 300tdi's having ECU's. Can someone please confirm this for me?
On the assumption that it is true that some later model 300tdi's had ECU's, what do they look like / where are they located?
I have a friend who has a September 1998 build 300tdi that has a heap of relays in the battery box but apparently nothing in the box under the drivers seat. His fuel pump is not of an electric variety but I was just wondering if he may have an ECU anyway...

AFAIK, none were ever imported into Oz.
Mines a Nov '98 build, first registered '99 and it's all mechanical. The 'ecu' ones you are refering to used an electonic module on the Bosch VE injection pump to vary the fueling instead of the mechanical aneroid/boost compensator diaphram assembly and also had EGR. It was part of improving emmisions, nothing more.
I have seen on ebay before ecu performance chips for 97 onward 300TDI Auto only, thought it interesting they did such a short run of them and Auto only.
I believe these would be for the 300tdi MPI motor not brought into australia by JRA. I have seen private imports with this motor. Had more power than normal tdi but also more to go wrong

The 300TDi was a 2.5l diesel lump. The MPI was a 2.0 4pot petrol lump.
I think they might be calling it 300TDi as IIRC the MPI was only available on the 'Facelift' series I Disco (post '94/'95).
AFAIK... The ECU on the 300TDi is for the EGR & other emissions bits (you'll be able to see by the little motor arangement on the pump instead of the usual cable).
