Quoted $850 for a Defender indicator stalk assembly !!

I had heard that "some" Landrover parts are every very expensive. However I have just had an amazing experience. The horn on my Defender stopped working, and the indicators were also becoming unreliable. So I took it to my "man" - who diagnosed the problem as a busted indicator stalk assembly, especially the horn switch which was totally stuffed. So he looked into a replacement indicator stalk assembly for me.....(PRC3875 - or the version appopriate for my VIN):

    New from Landrover: $AUD 850
2nd hand (presume from same place): $AUD 350

Then I did some home work.... and on Ebay - the very same part is:

    New (non-original) Australia: $150
New original UK: 50 something pounds + 8 pounds delivery
    New (non-original) UK: 22 pounds + 8 pound delivery

All are the appropriate versions for my VIN. As they say "The net changes everything" Anyone care to guess which one I went for ?
Now who is being ripped off - is it just me .... or is it all of us ? Who would spend $850 - an insurance company ?

    End of Pom whinge.

Without checking by VIN, that part number is worth $330 or thereabouts, genuine part from a Dealer.

The only problem with all this is whether you can have the vehicle off the road for a couple of weeks while the part arrives.

If it's a critical part true.... however if it's just to fix the horn. Not so much of a worry.

But I guess that lesser cost parts do appear to be available IN OZ for a great deal less than the dealer or other official channel rip offs.
And in my experience it's not always a couple of weeks... I ordered some small heater parts from ebay a week ago, and they arrived today (even after being opened by quarantine for looking like something dodgy in little baggies).

I do take that on board... I was alluding to the common problem of that switch stoping and the headlights not working as happened to my mate last week. It's their only car so they had to pay the $350 from MR for the switch

Anyway, I certainly agree with your message... we are being ripped off here through some sort of conspiracy And check ebay for the part you need

With the exception of my engine harness that had to be manufactured by Land Rover in the UK all of my parts have arrived same week - probably as quick as domestic shipping.. be my guest and pay full price, your mad if you do.

    Indicator stalk

Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne listed the complete indicator switch at $60 in their No31 catalogue.
That was the 1998 catalogue which needed 10% added for GST. The catalogue was due to be superseded, but just a few months ago prices in catalogue No31 were still current.

That's for a Defender up to "GA" (1990MY).

The Defender wasn't sold in Australia until "JA" (1992MY).

I'd imagine there wouldn't bee too much difference but you never know with LR.
