To do.. or not to do (T/C whine)

    G'day Guys

I have a 96 disco with a whine in the transfer case that suddenly turned up, most notable when moving fast down a hill with the foot off the gas if you move the leaver a little the sound changes slightly. The mechanic seems to think its a bearing but thinks it best to leave it be as there is no metal in the oil. The cost of pulling it out and shorting the bearing would be $1000 but I should just leave it till it breaks and do the hole $3500 rebuild in his view.

My problem is I'm trying to get every know problem sorted for some big trips and think paying $3500 for a rebuild is better then $3500 for a tow truck recovery plus rebuild, accomidation and not to mention a destroyed holiday.

Does the advise given sound right or not worth the risk?????

For a price somewhere between the two you could get a low mileage late model transfer case with quiet cut gears and the crossdrilled input gear. This is what I did to my Rangie.

If you can pull out the box youself and refit it you should be able to cut the price down substantially. The bearing kits for these are not dear and you should think about doing the clutch at the same time. I had a Pajero done which has the same issues as series 1 Discos, a weak main bearing. Mitsubishi quoted me $3k plus and another $1200 if I had the clutch done at the same time. A friend of my Dad's who was a mechanic did the whole job for $1250 and still made a profit as he had to charge me workshop prices as it was during the week and at work. I remember him saying at the time do not buy any of this gear from a dealer as you will pay 400% more just for parts. From memory I think it was Repco that do the clutch kits and most bearing suppliers should have a bearing kit. When you actually have a look in side there is not much too them. This was a few years ago but use the prices for parity. You may find you could buy a new box from the UK for that price delivered and fit it yourself. You would want to allow yourseldf a day to pull it out and a day to put it back in.

    Thanks for the input..

Its probably hard to say but if the main bearing is on the way out is it likly to go fast or drag out for a while?

I like the idea of doing the TC myself as I try to do as much as possible but unfortunatly I dont think I have the facilities to get her up and drop the TC very easily.

As a side note theres not much that hasn't been rebuilt now pritty much only the TC and diffs and the diff oil change showed no problems.

I cant see how they can charge $3500 for a t'c rebuild, the parts are f all, a bearing will be noisy for a long time before it lets go. The t/c in my rangie has done 280k and never been touched aprt from oil changes and has the usual LT230 noise - they will never be totally quiet.
