Interesting development of events : after 1000km I still had 40 litres in my tank (see earlier post), 150+km later I refuelled and got 129 litres in the tank!! I had a closer look at the tank, made by Out of Town in Sydney. I called them and learned that it had a capacity of 156 litres

I have the 140 litre Long Range Automotive tank in my Defender. It has had a pretty rough history and there is no damage to the tank at all (the truck is raised). I had new mounts made up for the rear sway bar so that it sits about and inch off the bottom of the tank (I remove it for nasty offroad work).

It all works like a treat - only problem of late is that when I fill the tank some fuel seems to slosh out the cap on rough roads - have just ordered a new filler cap too see if this solves the problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have the same tank, never had any real problems, it does leak a bit when completely full, possibly through the breather hose connection, too lazy to track it down.

I thought it hung a bit low but so far haven't bashed it off road, and I have dented both rear corners of the vehicle. The fuel light comes on with approx 30L left.

Main problem is the cost of filling it these days.

Tony, having watched in detail your slow destroying of your car, I must say that tank has come very close to some of those rocks when you negotiate your more nasty obstacles (about 1-2cm clearence) I dare say luck has been your allie.

You may also want to check out 4WD Systems in Adelaide www.4WDsystems.com.au . They do a 130L replacement tank and have a lot of technical info on their site about their tanks (seem well thought through). Also Bruce Davis in Sydney (9679-1179) supplies and fits the Out-of-Town brand.

May be illegal now. But have you ever tried lighting or igniting diesel. It does not happen easily and takes a fair amount of heat. Usually to get diesel to burn for fire training we have to drop ina bit of petrol to heat it up or start with gas (usually lines and nozzles).

Something else always seems to hit first though. Which surprised me, I thought I would have dented the tank by now. The tank I had on my Disco had lost about 10L capacity by the time I had finished with it.

    Scott,

Have you ever found out whether you can use any more of that 27 litres? It might be that the light comes on early, but if the pickup isn't low enough then it's a bit of a waste.

I just phoned a guy from ARB about this. He reckons that with the 127l lra tank filling at 100l is a good point. However when pressed he said that you should be able to use down to 120l+ but it's obviously not a good idea.

Yeah to be honest I've never wanted to push it.... I know I could probably get another 200 or so k's out of it but am happy to fill when it's on E.... and after replacing 2 lift pumps last year I've been told it's not a good idea to let it run down to suck the dregs from the bottom of the tank.... not that I would get any 'dregs' filling up at a BP
