EX Army no. 5 Trailer.... Blue Slip...

Hi all I am after some help if possible.......

I've just purchased an ex army no 5 trailer (finally) it's quite good with a false floor for camping and after market canvas hood. Paid $1100 for it with a heap of spares.

I went to register it today and to pass the blue slip seeing the ring hitch has no SWL marked on it I require a copy of the weights/capacities of the trailer the blue slip guy tells me.

If I had a copy of the old rego papers I'd be set becuse it's all listed down the bottom. BUT I don't have the old papers, neither do the folks I bought it off. Also the compliance plates on the trailer are unreadable from the amount of stone chips in them.

I am wondering if someone could possibly scan and send me or maybe even fax me the bottom section of the rego paper for a NSW registered no. 5 trailer so I can get the capacities and RTA codes off it for mine to avoid having to get it engineered.

Hopefully someone can help Thanks in advance.....

I had to get an Interim certificate to p/up my Workshop trailer and bring it home and the rego office required a Weighbridge ticket, it weighed 290kg's with the hoop frame and canvas.
I would get a set of stamps and put the Tare and Agg. (say 300kg Tare and 750kg's agg.) weight on the drawbar and use your license number and stamp it on the other side as your serial number, Regards Frank.

    thats not a bad idea.

I'd have to take it to another blue slip place though seeing they've already looked at it.

My back up plan is to take the plate off my normal box trailer, get it blue slipped then put the new plate on the no. 5 and put the original plates back on the box trailer...

it's either that or just pay for the engineering certificate.

This was posted on REMLR some time ago. Any help?

With the camper top, you would need a weighbridge ticket anyway, wouldn't you?

thanks, I'll give that to the blue slip place tomorrow morning, hopefully that is enough for them..........

It's not a propper camper set up ontop of the trailer, it's just a false floor ontop of the trailer so you can put a mattress ontop whilst still keeping all the trailer storage... I took it all off anyhow to keep the trailer as light as possible for it's weighing....... he he he

None the less that is quite interesting, thanks for our help

    Good afternoon all,

Just off the phone to a trailer inspector in Queanbeyan who said that in order for the trailer to pass rego inspection the axle had to be located behind the centre of the tub. Also, he'd had to move the axles of 4 no.5 trailers in the last 12 months for the same reason. Has anyone else had this? Google hasn't shone much light on the issue.

    That's a new one.

He is trying to register it under the latest ADRs I suspect. This might be the relevant section from VSB1:
    Vehicle Standards Bulletin VSB1
Rear overhang must not exceed the lesser of 3.7 metres or the front load space.
Get out your tape measure and have a look.

Bottom line is it is an old trailer manufactured before the ADRs existed. VSB1 does not apply to the No5.
Do you have proof of it's manufacture date?

If it were mine, I'd take it somewhere else.

From my perspective, your "back up plan" sounds most reasonable and effective.
They are still going to get your money and you have the least grief.
All money hungry crooks as far as I am concerned, you should try caravan rego costs in NSW.

    Many thanks indeed Mick,

I dusted off the tape measure and the axle sits in the middle of the tub - so in my mind the rear overhang does not exceed the front load space. Odd, the gentleman on the phone was most insistent that the tub had to be greater than 50% in front of the axle - I figured all no.5 trailers were pretty much the same.

Nevertheless I’ll be taking your advice and heading elsewhere.

Whats a van cost to register there? it's $72 here, same as any other trailer up to 4,500Kg.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
