Oil leak could be something simple like rocker cover gaskets. I think the engine sump holds about 5 ish litres. Maybe. Surely a Vogue has a loud stereo to hide noises...![]()
Last few times it was used (mostly short trips, but it was only pointed out to me after Mrs V drove a long way to work and back) there has been a 'griding noise' become more and more evident. I can't reproduce it when vehicle is immobile, and naturally it is impossible for me to isolate it while driving the vehicle. I presume it's somewhere in the runnind gear ? brakes ?
Also very disturbing is the fact I just checked the oil (did this 2 weeks ago was ok) and it was very very low. (How much oil is a 3.9 V8 supposed to take when filling from empty just out of nervous interest?). A look under the car and I saw why. There's oil covering everything - diffs, steering components, oil filter etc etc. There's obviously a leak somewhere higher up (and looks like a big volume - perhaps coming out under some pressure)?
Anyway I topped it up (with LOTS of oil) but the 1st boice didn;t go away so I think the two are unrelated.
Perhaps.
Maybe.
I have it booked in at MR for next week, but am unable to get on the waiting list for a heart transplant (I'm worried it might stop beating if it's a big problem). Hopefully it's something less dramatic.
Hopefully.
Any ideas / contributions ?

I know, new rangie, yours is a dud
But seriously, check wheel bearings, that's what grinding noises tend to be. jack each wheel up and see if it wobbles up/down or l/r.

To fill it up from empty including a new filter is about 6 litres.

Over here, it's not a leak, it's built in rust proofing!
The time you should worry about leaks is when they stop...

Seriously though, is you can't reproduce the noise while stationary, its got to be part of the drive train. Go out for a short run & try a few things to try & isolate the area... You know, pop the transfer into neutral, feather the brakes, etc...
Failing that, as Jon says, just fit a louder sound system.![]()

From dead empty it will take 5.1 litres plus 600mls for the filter.Check the timing cover oil seal and also the valley cover end seals. Give it a good clean so you can trace the oil leak.

Have you checked the flame trap to see if its blocked? If it is, it could be the source of the pressure build up.
On the my old 3.5 it had two smaller breathers which were blocked and it spued out oil everywhere. My wife was banned from parking in many drive ways with the old green 77.![]()
Just for laughs, check your shockies. On my 93 disco, In demented frustration at not being able to find the noise In the front end I'd redone the bearings, the king pins and the brakes. I had the suspension bushes ready to go, wife there to give me a hand when I hear "honey, come look at this."
I walk round to her with her hand in the wheel well rattling king the shocky and making the noise I coulnt find...
I nominate me for the nuff nuff award....
Im assuming that it had failed during a particularly fun mud session so there was no oil obvious because a, it was all in the mud and b, we'd washed it off getting the mud off.

I frequently have a similar 'grinding' noise in my rangie, but only when she comes for a surf with me, otherwise she stays in her own car![]()
