Have you spoken the the RTA ?
Hi all, has anybody gone through the process of a new registration of a old Landy where you cant quite prove that it is your vehicle?
I've had the vehicle since 2009, never had it registered and I've never had plates with it - I bought it from a farmer who had let it go after an engine/gearbox failure.
Thinking that I would get it registered, I have been reading all that I can from Service NSW.
At this stage I cant see a way for me to get it registered as I don't have any recepts or proof of ownership.
It also reads like I cant use a Stat Dec in this case either.
The only way that I can think of registering it, is to sell it to a family member with a receipt from me, they register it, and then I buy the ute back and transfer the ownership that way.
But if this is possible, then surely I can just somehow register it myself without all of the faffing around???
I'd love to hear any thoughts or wisdom here!
(edit: I have tried to contact the previous owner - I'm not expecting a reply)

Things may have changed but I’ve never shown proof of ownership when registering a “new” vehicle.

I done it around 8-9 years ago. RTA didn't seem concerned that I didn't have any paperwork, what they were concerned about was that I didn't have the cars last plates, and they were never handed in. Had to talk to someone higher up to get it sorted.

'93 D1 200Tdi 2-door, ARB's, MD transfer, sill tanks, winch, 2"lift.......
'95 D1 V8 auto......gone
'86 V8 RRC.....gone
Thats awesome, there must be a way then. I thought surely there must have been and that not every vehicle has proof of ownership. Thanks for this! It'll be interesting about the plates too, it didn't have any with it when I bought it either. I ran an RTA check on the issued plates when it was sold - no records.

Not necessarily in NSW, but a letter saying you bought vehicle ### on ### date for $$$ from ??? is enough to prove ownership. Do the letter now and with sellers name on it.....
Another potential issue will be proving the vehicle has been registered in Australia previously. Arming yourself with the CKD history may be enough to get you by.
What I have heard the way forward with a older vehicle is just get someone you know write you a hand written receipt with vehicle details and back date it and make up a price.
This only works on vehicle you know the previous history of and certain the RTA/ services NSW doesn't have a history of it on their records.
Anything from the 1980s backwards with last rego is safe as the computer records don't go back that far.
Just what I heard.......I wouldnt know about these things.
Thanks Chris and Ron, it may come to that too!
Proof of purchase
An original letter, bill of sale, receipt or tax invoice that includes:
- seller’s name, address and signature
- buyer’s name, address and signature (not required for small trailers bought from retail outlets)
- date the vehicle was sold
- selling price or market value of the vehicle (whichever is higher)
- vehicle registration and VIN/Chassis numbers.
