I cannot answer the question for you sorry but didn't the later Rangies have a 24 spline axles anyway, can't you get a second hand 24 spline Rangie diff and axle to put the locker into? Sounds a bit easierOriginally Posted by vogue
I went up to Mt Dissapointment on Saturday and destroyed my rear diff in my '89 Rangie.
I'm looking at buying a detroit locker in a Rangie diff housing. The guy has been running JMac 24 spline axles.
So the question is can i run standard disco 24 spline axles? Is the hub the same as the origional 10 spline that would have origionaly been in the diff.
I know the strength may be an issue, but i'm only running 32" muddies.
Thanks
Alex

The stub axle is slightly shorter on the 24 spline cars.
The 24 spline axle won't fit all the way in with the original stub axle fitted.
Scott
thanks, so do i need to get a disco/ 24 spline stub axle and bearings as well, and then will it work?
Will i be able to use my existing brake disc?
The guy I spoke to used the original RR hub & disc.
The bearings are the same either way.
Scott
thats good.
So i only need the stub axle???
That's what he told me.
I mentioned that I would be doing it to my RR if my original diff ever packed it in & he showed me the external difference in the axles & why the stub axle needed replacement.
Until that point, I just thought I could fit the axles without other mods.

Thanks Scott, i just sourced some, so should be ready to put the new diff in Wednesday.
What is wrong with the MacNamarra axles? I don't understand why you want to change these to weaker disco axles!
And why would you want to change to the shorter stub axles? Land Rover have made a number of decisions to go backwards over the years, I don't see why you want to follow!
Definatly nothing wrong with Macnamara axles. The diff i'm buying doesn't come with axles as the guy is using them in another vehicle. If i could afford it i would buy the JMacs, but they are $660. JMac makes them longer than standard so the origional stub axle is ok, but i have been told that because the 24 spline axles out of a disco 1 are a bit shorter than the 10 spline, that i need to us the disco stub axle which is shorter by the same amount.
Is this correct?
