    Can you Piggy back Intercoolers?

Just wondering if Intercoolers can be run in tandem ie air in to Intercooler 1 then. out into Intercooler number 2 then exit to manifold.
or just pull it out and mount the new one listed below?
How big is a L/R Intercooler without pulling it out again to measure..anyone?
got a aluminium one 600mmx300mmx80mm universal mounting

Hmmm.... You should be able to. Your biggest problem would be the plumbing & complete lack of space (especially if you run AC).

we are talking 300Tdi here, aren't we ?
I'd imagine the pressure drop through two, with the attendent plumbing would be horrific. The stock ones aren't a terribly efficient thing in the first place, the tanks are a horrible design, and with the inlet and outlet offset to the same side, the flow through the core wouldn't be terribly efficient either.
One of the UK crowds (Allard ?) do a kit using the OE i/c and a water/air one in series, but again I think it's a compromise. I'd rather have one or the other correctly sized for the job.

Do a search for the riceburner sites, theres plenty of info about intercooling out there.

Anyway, the message is don't do them in-line, the pressure changes etc from one to the other means efficiency plummets, throttle response will be awful etc etc. Plumb them instead with forked connections effectively side by side.

It'd be nice if someone could come up with a way of using a WRX intercooler. They are cheap as because the rice boys love to upgrade to bigger better ones and sell the standard factory units.

Maybe 2 WRX coolers in parallel? No idea where they would fit though.

TombRaider will be along soom with some proper advice!

Dirty Dawg, A while ago I put some information on this site re my dual intercooling for a 300TDI. I am running the standard I/C and then feed the output thru a PWR water/air I/C and into the inlet manifold. I constantly check the air temps into and out of the water/air I/C and can drop an additional 30deg C.(every 10deg Farenheit air temp reduction results in an additional 1% power increase with the appropriate fueling). As far as pressure loss is concerned, this can be overcome by 'sensing' boost pressure at the back of the inlet manifold and using that to drive the wastegate and fueling aneroid. This results in 15PSI (1 Bar) at inlet manifold. While the turbo is spooling up it has to 'fill' both of the I/C's with pressured air (not really turbo lag, but acts the same as turbo lag). Best done with some pump adjustments. I pull a caravan most of the time with my vehicle so I am not really after instant acceleration. Having said that, it still boogies compared to the standard 300TDI. More power is only available at the cost of more fuel so, expect to drop a little in economy. I have gone from 900k's/tank to 750K's/tank but love the extra power. I can send you some photo's if you want. Regards Foxy

Just a thought why not run 2 thinner intercoolers in series with each other..

the first closest to the fan, the second closest to the grill.

In theory, youd get an initial cooling through the first intercooler by the air that that has cooled the second intercooler. The already cooled turbo air from the first intercooler is then further cooled by the second intercooler.
