Crikey Ron - that's crappy luck. How's the radiator?
I went out to the markets this morning. When I got back into the RR, I started it and it made this awful noise.
A check under the car showed water dripping everywhere. I opened the bonnet and found the cooling fan askew. The water pump had collapsed. It looks like the shaft has broken.
The car was flat-bedded home and I'll fit a new pump tomorrow.
Ron.

Bugger Ron and just when your ready to do a few extra km's with the long range tank. At least if you haven't fitted it yet it gives you a good chance to do so when its not on the go.
Good luck,
Charlie
Fortunately, the radiator seems undamaged. The fan belt had stopped the fan moving forward into the radiator.
Charlie, the tank might be delayed in fitment. I'll probably get around to fitting it later in the year.
The car has to be operational tomorrow so I can get to work (I borrowed my wife's car to get here this arvo).

Bugger!
Hope thats all that goes wrong Ron.
Land Rover should have included a suitably modified Defender 130 Trayback as standard with every P38a sold. No-one would complain about being flat-bedded home.![]()
Ron - did the water pump give any indication it was about to go? Other than the extra loud noise immediatley prior?
I had a 82' Subaru do the same thing once - water pump was really rattly / noisy for months - but one day it all went quiet. Great! But then the dash lights came on, gauge went into red and there was a pulley lying on the ground under the car...
Would you beleive this all happened 20 metres from a spare parts warehouse that had that model water pump in stock? Was driving again about an hour later.

Had it in the leyland P76 once. Big bang and then steam and red light on the dash. Fan shattered and went through the radiator, top hose but coiuldn't get through the bonnet.
Absolutely none. It was fine when I turned it off, and made a rattly noise when it was started. As I said, it looks like the shaft has broken. The shaft is quite visible in front of the pump housing. I'll know tomorrow when I get it out.Originally Posted by Hardy

I'll have to pull the radiator out because I can't remove the fan from the pump shaft in situ now the shaft is broken. The shaft won't come all the way out of the pump with the fan on as the fan hits the radiator.
