If u need one ASAP, i would just go the 2nd hand one.
O'Briens buy from the dealer hence they ask u for a VIN & i presume the other glaziers would do the same.
If a dealer doesnt have one it would need to be ordered so it wouldnt be here until Mon/Tue anyway.
There are variations in the glass depending on your VIN(tint, no tint, upper stop light or none, demister etc) the size is the same since 83 from memory, so if u can get your hands on a cheaper variant & it does the job i would just go for that.

Yes, well the local dealer parts bit doesn't work Saturdays, so they won't be able to order the glass until Monday, and even if available be lucky to have it in town by Wednesday. I thought the glass was the same size, but hadn't worried about the other variations. No upper stop light, but mine is demister and tinted. However, I can live without the demister (and have checked with the RTA that I don't have to have it) as I mostly use the outside mirrors anyway, and I can live without the tinting or even get it tinted to match the other windows.

I suspect I will not be able to make a decision until Monday anyway, and I will have to block the hole some way to drive into town - unless I just pick up the glass and fit it myself - its a pretty easy job, although fiddly with all those screws - in which case I can go into town in the 2a to pick it up. (I aborted the trip to the sale because of the dust coming in and the lack of security)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I did not get on line again until after two. I have now cleaned up the broken glass and fitted the window out of an old series 2 I have - but this is only temporary as it is made of perspex and is nearly opaque. But it will keep the dust and the light fingered gentry out until I can get a proper replacement.

Through various contacts I have now established the following:-

Glass shape was the same 1958 - 2003, but thickness changed from 5mm to 4mm with the introduction of the Defender. Variations are demister and tinting. I should have both.
5mm ones are apparently none in the country, ex UK. 4mm there is apparently one each no demister and demister, none tinted. I think these are dealer network stocks, so there may be others about. Monday I am chasing to see if I can find a second hand one, I would prefer the correct one, but may have to settle for anything I can get.

Travelling up north this year I saw a surprising number of cars with smashed rear windows (well it was about 3 but itwas in a space of a week) and wondered out loud why a back window would go, was it too much stuff in the back or loads shifting? I was told it is invariably a stone bouncing back from the trailer.

I had also wondered what those boat bow like arrangements in shade cloth or even alulminium were and now I know.

So far have not found the right window, but the best options seem to be a second hand heated one in Sydney for $175 (waiting on shipping cost) and a new unheated one locally for $215. Prices round the country vary from $100 to $339, depending on thickness and presence of a demister. But it seems glass is very expensive to ship round the country!

Not if you've got the rear windscreen covered on your insurance. This is the hassel I had earlier this year when some person decided to put a stubbie through mine. If you pay an extra amount they replace it for free. I learnt the hard way though.

Yes. I have to pay the excess even on glass which is more than the cost will be. ($400). However, I think this is the first broken glass I have had since the early sixties, so I suppose I can't complain too much - done a lot of miles since then.
