    RR Brake Master Cylinder

Spent yesterday helping CJ with the fitting of a refurb kit on his 85 RR master cylinder...(the county project deferred ).

The shuttle valve seems to be stuck in the bore and therefore only the secondary system is getting fluid.

Has any one had this issue and solved it without replacing the master cylinder?

CJ reports that whilst the swivel valve remains siezed the brakes are now working fine. Only the warning light mechanism is suspect

For those without the RAVE disc the link to the page posted above is:

    Mahn,
I rebuilt my master cylinder a few weeks ago & found my shuttle valve was tight in the cylinder. It took quite a lot of air to get it out enough to reach in with a pair of long nosed pliers to pull it all the way out.

I also had a M/C that was returned under Parts Warranty as I thought my bore would have been worn by now. This shuttle valve came out easily.

After cleaning & fitting new seals, it all went back together easily enough.
I assume if the shuttle valve hasn't moved for quite a few years, then it might stick in position.

The brakes can work OK with a seized shuttle valve but I'm worried that it won't do it's job in the event of fluid loss from one of the brake circuits.

CJ's MC appears to have been resleeved with a stainless steel bore but the swivel valve bore was as cast and there was a fair bit of corrosion.

I guess that that is why RR went to a Girling set up from the preceeding AP kit in late 87.

Never the less CJ and I had a pleasant afternoon at Land Rover Heaven (LVS) on Saturday Arvo...I missed out on a set of alloys from a wrecked Rossignol Disco though $350

regular brake fluid changes will prevent or reduce these problems.....
as brake fluid is hydroscopic.....it is the moisture it absorbs that causes all the damage.....

so....if it is changed more often....it wont have a chance to absorb too much water......which means less or no corrosion......
