Unhappy Mass Air Flow Management - Problems

Hi Guys, Hoping you may be able to help me, I have a 92 disco v8 3.5 on dual fuel unfortunatly I have a sinking feeling that I may have damaged my mass air flow management thingy. I needed a tow start after washing the motor down and I left it on lpg I had a rather extreme backfire which blew a hole in the plastic inlet pipe ( which I have repaired ) that goes from the maf to the inlet manifold basically ever since it doesnt seem to respond to the right foot as it did before it idles okay and purrs on the open road but it just seems sluggish and I am pretty sure that I am using more fuel than before . If this is the case is there a easy test I can do or do I have to take it to a landrover dealer which is inconvenient to me , or can I take it to another mechanic will he be able to suss it out , as I have noticed on different forums this can be an expensive part to replace . Hoping you guys and help cheers Daisy

Just a WAG but I think youve cooked it and your fuel management system has gone to limp mode.

You should be able to get a second hand one from a wreckers at a reasonable price or from four wheel drives in Melbourne,

In the meantime, try taking the plug off of the MAF and see if it gets worse.

    Worth a try.
Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. Reconnect, & see how you go.

If I take the plug off the MAF it stalls within a few seconds. Should it do that or should it still run with the MAF disconnected

I had the Disco break down (once only). Came straight from the mechanics for a tune up and the suspension place next door. The suspension place had unclipped the MAF when doing the front shocks/springs and had not put it back on properly, and it had worked it's way loose in about 2 k's. Luckily the mechanic was there within 5 minutes and had it going a few minutes later

My experience is that it will run very rich (hotwire type. Flap type may be different) & even after replacing the plug whilst still running makes no difference.

Disconnecting the battery resets the computer & away it goes again back to normal.

I doubt whether the MAF has any effect on your running LPG assuming you are not running a multipoint/sequential injection system.

What I have had is a damaged diaphram in the vapouriser as a result of a big backfire. This caused the LPG mixture to be too lean & therefore the vehicle lacked power.

You could also check that the plenum chamber is not leaking ie. letting additional air in after the LPG has been introduced. This would result in a lack of vacuum at the vapouriser therefore leaner mixture/low power etc.

A mixture that is too lean often results in more backfires especially as you try to accelerate hard from low revs.

    Good luck

    Mass Air Flow Management Problems

Thanks fellows for the advice I had a rdo today and tried pulling off the maf plug instant stall replaced plug disconnected battery for 20 minutes pressed foot on the brake pedal several times local mechanic said something about draining capacitors or something like that put it all back together starts easy idles great still seems to need a lot of right foot before the revs build up. So I think I will have to take it to the Landrover mob in another town and see what they can find out appreciate all the help and ideas thanks again cheers Daisy

Isn't it MAF u have the flapper type one ?

if it is, you can get them fixed, the hotwire ones from the 3.9lt engines you can't do much with them.
