    Question Horn trouble Disco

    G'day Mates!
Another nasty problem on my Disco: just prior to the annual RWC-inspection the horn laid off... which means I (read: the Disco) will fail and won't get the required seal on the form sheet. So I'll have to fix the fault before going there. That's what I am trying to do at least.

On investigation I could locate the troubleshooting part : the airbag-contact-unit, located behind the steering wheel, has given up its ghost. As the car has originally been SRS-equipped but the system has been disabled ages ago anyway I decided to replace the rather costly contact unit with the system of the non-SRS-model (STC 2910), which simply consists of a brass slip ring in a holder, mounted on the back of the steering wheel.
The trouble now is that on my SRS-equipped model the wiring connector consists of a plug whereas on non-SRS models there must be some kind of spring contact against the slip ring. Does someone have a picture of the part in question? Or a part number maybe? Or an idea how to build your own solution? Is there a bush method?

As the time for the annual inspection is drawing near I am a bit in a rush, so please come up with your tips, tricks and hints...
    Cheers!
    Johannes

did the horn work after the mods?? I have repaired worn contact pins by soldering a contact out of a relay on to the end of the pin,you might be able to make one using a small bolt and maybe a spring out of a ball point pen or get the parts out of a wreck and modify to suit the disco, sorry I have not had the steering wheel out of a disco so do not know what they are like
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

    gidday johannes,
would they accept a horn button mounted on the dash? as to replace the airbag system, or disable it is illegal here and 'i presume' there also, so if they can be convinced that the srs system works and that you can push a button to toot then your problem is solved theoretically speaking?!
and hi to her indoors and the little ones , which must be eating everything in sight by now [the kids - that is, not mum.]

    Try this

I went from the same setup as you (MA series) to an aftermarket sports steering wheel. On the old forum I posted the sequence, but this should be self explanatory

It's just a brass strip. After 12 months, still going strong. If you can't source a normal steering wheel (without airbag) PM me, I still have my old snail connector. Apart from one missing plastic lug, in good order

    Mates!
Thanks for your replies, this helps me a lot!
Langy, as non-SRS models are as rare as hen's teeth over here the snail connector will be my last resource if I cannot get hands on another steering wheel or if the brass-strip thingy doesn't do the trick. And I have all the lugs still, so no probs here either. Thanks for the pic, it explains everything! Now I better get going.

Greetings Harry! No, it is not illegal to disable the airbag system, but if you do you will have to remove it altogether. The dash-mounted button was initially a thought of mine, too, but requires approval of a certified engineer, according to the rules over here (Blah blah....) which makes this option look rather unattractive. Technically it means I have to have an auto electrician doing the job for me and me paying plenty of bucks for a button and 5cm colour-coded wiring...
All the family says hi and we are hoping to see you again somewhen soon, down there! Having said that, the kids need feeding...

Thanks all, I'll let you know of our progress!
    Cheers

SWMBO arrived home today, "Dearest, the horn isn't working".

Start to investigate, fuse ok but how does one get the horn button out to gain access to the gubbins behind it, inc. the nut? Have got the LR Logo out & I can see brass, but that's all.

    NO air bag.

    Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp. please.

Take the steering wheel off - that will expose the slip ring and slide affair. But first, try listening for the horn relay if it works or not. The horn units themselves died not too long ago on my car - I ended up pulling them apart, using the connector and splicing in some old Mercedes horns I found in my favorite junkyard.

Thanks for that langy. Both your horns died at the same time???

I can't hear the relay but it's behind the LH kick panel so would you normally? I will check it tomorrow in daylight.
Maybe you can hear it, but it's not the sort of thing you listen out for especially when the horn sounds & blankets any sound from there.

    I'll check that first up.
