Well I sussed that the series 1 would weigh 1225kg and the trailer 700kg so in theory I was 75kg under the Freelanders towing capacity. As it had then best tow weight of any car I could get my hands on I decided to give it a go - absolutely no problems with cruise on the freeway at 110 and on secondary roads at 80-90. The 400km round trip returned 9.5 l/100km - not bad considerig the size of the load.
The series 1 is crap though - usual e-bay issues - description didn't quite match the car - but the cost didn't warrant the cost of travelling to inspect first - paid $600 but worth $300. The dash and parcel tray is actually missing from the firewall and has been replaced with one made out of timber - not obvious in the ad. Also there are no dash vents - looks like the top of the firewall has been removed and refabricated without the vents.
Chassis looks OK though and body is what you would expect. Initial work will be new firewall, and new brakes - oh there is a wooden panel where the instruments should be - so they will be needed too.
Why do I do these things to myself.
