I have tried just about everything. The only thing I can think of is that the starter is frozen, however tapping it does not work either.

Probably unlikely to happen on a shiny new vehicle, but when my Stage 1 pulled this sort of stunt it proved to be a broken heat shield over the starter which was shorting. Didn't find that until had replaced the $250 solenoid

I guess the collective wisdom is that it's an electrical problem

Sounds definately like your starter. Maybe the throw out is buggered. I had a similar experience. Seems like mine was the main starter relay playing up. You could hear it trying to engage / pull in the power.

    Possibly an electronic problem?

Does this thing have electronic control or management? This is a classic symptom of failing electronics. Failure, then self-rectification after a cool down period. Commonly the failures become closer together and the cool down periods longer until the 3 cent component in the $2000 box fails completely. This is why I like diesel vehicles with mechanical in-line injection, or petrol vehicles with carburettors and points. You can diagnose and repair them roadside. How would like to have this sort of problem a couple of hundred k's south-west of Winton, say between Coorabulka and Davenport?

You have won the raffle CraigE.

It goes on for a new starter-motor Monday.

Let me guess, the raffle prize is the caked on mud of your old starter.
