    Noisy rear diff

Hi all, I have just purchased a 98 LS Discovery V8 auto and to my dissapointment it has a whine in the diff which I hadnt noticed when we test drove it. The noise comes in at about 85k and onwards. Im wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and what did they do to fix it. Im going to put a thicker oil in it to see what happens, if that fails I guess Im off to the diff shop for options or maybe try to source a low k second hand unit. Many thanks .. Brad

Noisy diffs are unusual in any Landrover - are you sure it is the diff? Any diff noise is usually drowned out by the transfer case (if there is oil in the diff).

I changed the oil in the diff on the weekend with a thicker oil from Penrite and most of the whine has gone I have read lots of info in various places and yes it does seem common for a Disco to have noisy transfer cases, but mine seems to be comming from the rear. Fingers crossed the diff doesnt fall out for a while. Great car otherwise, slightly better than my old series 3

Generally speaking diffs can make an awful lot of noise for many years before failing, so it is unlikely that it is about to "fall out" unless there are other symptoms such as obvious play in the pinion bearings.
