    Td5 Fuel Pump

I had the water sensor warning light come on going up to the Watagans sunday, so when we stopped to air down i drained the filter, also i cleaned the water sensor/drain plug as it was full of crap as well.

    The car has been down on power and after draining the filter on the new tank of fuel coming home the car had more go and was really back it's normal self, so my conclusion is that it had a case of bad fuel, but whats happening now is the fuel pump is screeming it's titsoff even when the car is running, you can hear it down around 60ks, i'm thinking 3 things;

    1) water sensor

    2) air coming in because of drain not sealing properly

    3) fuel filter full of crap

    What do you think guys.

The car is hard to start but starts and runs OK just needs a few more turns to fire up.

    Baz.

There was a post on this noise a few weeks ago. I've got the same sort of noises from my TD5 fuel pump, but the comments from the thread seemed to indicate this was fairly common.

Does your quieten down after a minute or two? Mine is just noisy for 30-40 seconds after starting and then it settles down. I pulled it all out to take a look and it was all as clean as a whistle.

I gather a new one is $1300 (fitted I think). Anyway, do a search on the previous thread & I'll watch this thread with interest.
    Cheers

Mine was screaming all the time

It has been sorted now, it was the fuel filter and a combination of crap in the filter and the centre O-ring (i left the old one in there when i changed it last) i'm such a drongo it must of stayed in there when i removed the old filter, i didn't stick my finger up there to feel around to make sure
You might want to look at that, i had know idea that would be the problem.

The TD5 Disco fuel pump is easier to get to and is only $468 from Karcraft so only around $600 fitted less if you do it yourself of cause.

I hope so! One expensive filter otherwise.

My mechanic put on a new filters throughout the car 6 months ago, with a new water sensor thingy on the bottom as the old one was broken. Maybe I should check it and see if it is blocked or something.

Is it the filter next to the rear drivers side wheel that you found this gunk in? Is it easy to check?

the filter on the TD5 is on the low pressure side of the pump so if anything is left loose or not sealing it will leak when the ignition is on
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,

    TD5 Fuel Pump

Have read with interest your problem. I had exactly the same a couple of weeks ago. turned out to be a broken water sensor that was letting in air. The TD5 hates the stuff (in the fuel line). I replaced the filter and sensor but did not bleed the air out and the fuel pump damn near s*#t itself. Had Ayers in Brookvale (NSW) to take a look. They bled out the air and she runs as quietly as ever. Give it a go!

OK Mudlark - so save me from searching and tell me how to bleed the air out of the fuel lines. Is it the Key on/off 5 times thing (or is that pumping the accelerator 5 times)?

Well if it's the same as the Disco then you need to turn ignition on and leave for 3 minutes, then with the pedal at full throttle start car, not letting it turn over for more than 30 seconds, once started it should be OK.

Thats from the Disco TD5 manual
