    Help TD5 Head

I need advice about the TD5 Head.
The mechanic has cleaned and checked my head and I now know that it is only slightly warped 2 thou out.
Big problem is it has been poorly shaved in the past so the boor sleeve have imprinted on it . The water galeries need welding to build them back up to seal (been told this isn't to hard if I can find someone to do it) and the glow plug holes have cracks(Been told this is a real problem). This has been long term damage and was definatly there when I bought it!

Is it worth risking $500 odd trying to have it welded and re skimmed or agree its cactus.
Also looking for the the best place to source a new or second hand head.
So far been quoted $4780 from land rover, $3770 from Brittish 4WD for new. I have also found a second hand one of a motor that put a conrod through the block $1750.

i thought i read somewhere that the td5 head was specially heat treated and couldnt be machined??

this might be why cylinder liners are marking the head??

Yea I did read that. Inirially when I droped it off he looked at it and said no there's no treatment on that. AFter cleaning is when he discovered the wofull shave it had been given.

You're having a bad run Edd

The Tdi head can't be skimmed after overheating.

I'd be taking the second hand one. The head sounds like a general mess from the cracks and the previous machining and the workmanship that probably needs to go into all of it for something that probably will never be 100% will no doubt cost as much as the $1750 head.

At least then you know its all right.
    Cheers

    head-aches

    Hang in there,
I've just been through the head dramas (check my intro).
Just imagine how we felt stuck in Melbourne for a week(lucky we had friend's house to stay at).
I got a second hand head down from Sydney (well workshop did),
    cost around $1800.
If your doing your own head assembly, make sure you use really good sealant around the cam sandwich plate and rocker cover mating surfaces.

I think the second hand head would be the go,mine had no sign of cracking and slight marking around where the bore contacts the head, for the sealant for the cam carrier I used loctite 510 gasket sealant spread it very thin you do not want the excess going into the oil galleries and blocking oil to the lash adjusters, sounds like the previous owner gave it a hard time and maybe had it cranked up to get more power m

Go the second hand head option ed, but see if you can have it inspected by a head specialist before you part with the cash, once they give it the ok pay for it and whack it on and them come to the BBQ on the long weekend so we can all cheer you up. Matt
