    Too Much Grunt

Hi all I have been reading about Dieselgas, chips etc. On Tuesday I was at Agquip again and talk to KLR. The conversion to the 130 look tempting as now its ONLY $1600 after the rebate, say it fast and its not very much he he. Still a big investment to me anyway. What has been worrying me about all the extra power and torque from either this or a chip is whats going to happen to the manual gearbox is it going to stuff it, especially 5th gear and the bearings. I know for a fact if you put too much into a toyota gearbox they stuff up especially if you drive them fast ie 120 or more. I live in the country and drive at 100 or more all the time in hilly country. Just after your thoughts on whats going to break if you get too much torque. I am going out now but will be back this afternoon, has anyone had any problems?
    Cheers Scott

scott, i think you will find the extra power and torque you'll get from the conversion will not be high enough to cause you any gear box problems. there's a lot of 5 litre v8 land rovers going around using the standard box without any problems. but they do blow alot of diffs.

The R380 has a strong 5th gear. The gearbox is rated to 380 nm of torque, hence the designation. You shouldn't have an issue.

Others can be more technical about the hilux box, but its essentially a 4 speed with 5th tacked on at a later date. All sorts of shaft bending & bearings problems when towing. Just which toy boxes this applies to, no idea.

I seem to recall the early LR 5-speed boxes had a cantilevered 5th gear - that's why you shouldn't lug them in 5th. Later boxes had, I believe, the 5th gear supported at both ends of the shaft.

Thanks I have a TD5 130 defender so I shouldn't have a problem, Thankyou. If they are taking V8 torque then they shouldn't have any problems with a chipped TD5. The truck has been great so far, but a little heavy on fuel. I only get at best 500km before the light comes on. This isn't very good compared to others I believe so I have just ordered a new air and fuel filter, it may help. Thanks for the replies all

As most will know, I have a chip and tow a 1500kg Caravan everywhere in 5th gear. Now done 60K and no issues.
(135Kw and 450Nm via a BD chip). Also run synthetic oil in the gearbox and TX.

THats the kind of power i'm putting out with my chip. I'm more concerned that adding the gas will just push my baby over the edge. I don't want or need more power just after better economy and like the sujestion of better wear and tear of the setup.

I had a chat to them about this and the options are there to give greater economy or power. They just adjust the fumigation computer to use less gas and get the increased milage benefits for less $$$$.

Trev - IMHO, you are asking for trouble. We recently replaced a TD5 Defender gearbox which had lunched fifth gear in a major way due to similar towing techniques (tandem axle trailer with a canvas box). This vehicle is regularly maintained (10 000km service interval, all oils replaced as required) and had done only 125 000km.
