    Td5

    Hi all!
I've got offered a vehicle with the ominous Td5 engine. Whilst I am personally not very keen on this particular engine and so far having succeeded in avoiding them, now, as the years go by, I probably will have to get used to them.
What are your experinces with this particular power plant? Anything I should know and think about beforehand? What are the weaknesses (and, of course, strenghts) of this engine?
Your advice and experiences are appreciated!
    Cheers
    Johannes

Havent heard any real negatives apart from the injector loom problem, they use a timing chain so no belt to worry about, i think the basic engine is pretty solid just the electrics that would worry me but saying that no one i know has had probs with them.

Personally I think the TD5 is an excellent engine.

Also listen for a leaky exhaust manifold and make sure that there is always coolant in it.

Definately not knocking the engine, just as a purchaser i would look at the electrics like i would any efi landy, petrol or diesel.

Sensor for the coolant is the best thing you can do for them. Have it checked for exhaust leaks on the manifold and the head gasket. Even with my blown head mine would happily start and run without any complaint. The electrics arn't that bad.

I love mine, It's very quick for a diesel, very cheap to run extremely quiet.

Go drive an older diesel then jump in a TD5. I drove a 300tdi disco the other week and couldn't believe how slow and noisy it was compaired to my TD5 disco

    Td5

I like my 2003 Defender a lot but have had 1 problem with electrics and that was the Throttle Potentiometer.
It buggered up while we were in Newman and because we had a camper attached it took 3 weeks to get it back to Perth to be fixed.
No one could even look and diagnose it in Newman, nearest was in Karratha over 500klms away!!!.
That's the worst thing about them, not that they may (and do) breakdown but no one can fix the things and LR are closing down country dealers!!!!
That's really going to help us who love to get out there into remote areas or just away from Perth.
Do they really think owners or prospective owners are going to travel hundreds or thousands of klms just to look over a possible vehicle and then do the same to have it serviced if they buy it?
    I don't think so somehow.
I'm not the only one whose had this TP go either.
Great diesel, pity about the way it's controlled.
Any one want a 2003 Td5 Defender, low kays, no dings, not alot of use off road and what it has done hasn't been real rough stuff.

yes as above fit a low coolant alarm, check the manifold gasket, also there is a small coolant hose that hides behind the turbo check that as well it gets hard from the heat of the turbo did the head gasket in mine may have been caused by the above hose blowing 5 months earlier which is why I fitted the alarm you cannot trust the temp guage. j
