TD5 Clutch - How Long does she go for ?

    Gday

I am looking at getting a TD5, took one for a test drive yesterday, lets just say it looks better than I thought a Defender could ever look... its owned by a mechanic and looks as if it just came out of the showroom.

The ONLY thing I can fault it on (ps there is NO oil leaks that I can see) is that its on its origional clutch, at 140,000kms ... I was informed by a very helpful forum member that if the clutch catch's at the end of the clutch travel then the clutch is on its way out ... !!

I am about to drive from Sydney to perth to dampier in a 7 day hike ... and wondering .. what should I expect to ...

    A. Pay for a new clutch
    B. What else could it be ?
    C. ??? --

Any information would be great ...

    Thanks in advance,

Cameron (soon to be a td5 owner)

Who knows what torment the car has been through?
    What was it driven like?
When your in doubt replace it, and get the vehicle checked over by someone in the know before you buy it.
Ask yourself how much it would cost to get towed home if it did go?

    Thanks for the reply ...

How has it been driven ... I would suspect very very easy, its never been off road, there is not a scratch on it (under, sides or roof) .. the person who owns it now is the first owner, had every service done within 100kms of the required KM ... best of all he is an accountant, and has towed his caravan 4 times totalling about 50km (I know where he lives and where his trailer lives)

I would suspect its pretty clean in that case, I am just trying to see what the average KM a clutch can handle day to day!

Still keen to know how much they will be to replace or what else it could be (Master Cylinder?)

    Thanks again.

Mines rolling through 120k at the moment and had an absolute **** of a life as far as clutches are concerned.

Big power, big torque, oversized rubber and driven hard offroad a LOT!!!

My clutch shows no signs of trouble (touching wood as we speak).

Lower end, about 1" from the full depressed position...

    Always has from new....

180kw and 550nm hasnt killed it yet, so I'm not worried!

    Cheers

My '99 Disco TD5 had 175k when sold and the clutch worked like new. My '03 Disco TD5 has just had the master cylinder replaced at 100k due to working too low to the floor - not pushing fluid in the 1st part of the stroke. The clutch now starts to take-up about an inch from the floor, but still has a bit of free-play at the top.
But my clutches don't get much abuse due to country driving and my trying to make them last forever.

Clutch condition depends almost entirely on the way it has been driven rather than the mileage - so there is no way really of knowing.

However, with the type of clutch and mechanism used in Landrovers since the early sixties, the position of engagement is almost certainly dependent only on the withdrawal mechanism - problems are most likely to be either the master cylinder, the slave cylinder (both are easy, cheap jobs) or there is some chance it could be excessive wear on the ball pivot of the withdrawal fork - gearbox out problem, but parts still cheap, although at that mileage you might want to put a clutch in while at it.

I was speaking to my mechanic about clutches the other day and he reckoned (depending on a lot or variable obviously) 200,000k's is a good life from a TD5 clutch. I am looking at changing some spiggot seal/bearing thingy as it is whining and was considering replacing the clutch at the same time (done 150,000k's) while all the bits are in pieces, as there is a bit of wear in it.

Don't want to high jack, but what should I expect to pay for a new clutch and how many different options do I have to replace it with heavy duty etc?
'99 Manual TD5 D2.......heap of money spent on it and it has ended
