Thread: To secure an Engel in a Defender wagon

I just use turnbuckles off the handles into rings attached to the false floor.

Works fine if the lid opens sidways. If longways, the lid won't open fully.

Mine's an autofridge, its fine to mount solidly. Some are recommended to have a spring platform though.

When I bought my County, it had a piece of 5/8" thick plywood bolted to the RH wheel tub. Bolted to the plywood was a rectangular frame made of about 20mm x 2.5m angle iron. The Engel sat inside the frzme and was held down to it by turnbuckles connected to the fram and over the handles of the fridge. That frame did the previous owner for many years of travel throughout Oz.

I've got mine bolted lengthways to the shelf which is across between the 2 wheel arches, and back against the cargo barrier. 2 bolts go up inside the wheel arch and into the feet and just 1 goes up through the shelf. Too hard to reach the back to put a 4th bolt in as I don't have arms about a metre long.
It enables the fridge to be right back against the side of the vehicle and doesn't leave that large gap there would be if I had it on a slide.
It's worked well so far and hasn't come loose when in the rough stuff or corrugations.
For long trips I remove the back seat and have a bent piece of metal the same depth as the seat step, bolted through the floor and the fridge is sat on top of that and bolted down at the front. The back is held by the handles to the cargo barrier by turnbuckles. I couldn't remember what they were called until I read someone elses post!
This is very effective, is easy to access for the cook and is easily removed to replace seats.

I have pulled out the back seats and it now sits on its own shelf behind the passenger, secured by turnbuckles. It ain't going anywhere!

When the seats are in, I secure it to the cargo barrier in the back. Does not move.

Power outlet in the back. Will try and find some pics.

Mine is mounted in the rear between the two rear passenger seats.

I've replaced the rears for the Exmoor Trim seats with 3x individual seats in the rear rather than the 60/40 split.The middle seat I've removed and have mounted the Engel quick release base to the seat frame into which the fridge slots into place. I then have a 40L water tank mounted on the floor in front of it...

I've got an older 39ltr engle that sits on the floor behind the drivers seat (literally on the floor). You have to remove the rear seats and mounts but it fits in a treat. The drivers seat go's back just far enough to sit comfortably, but need to slide it forward to open the fridge. Its a great location as it means you just open the side door and the fridge is nice and low to get things in and out. It also is the same height as my false floor and with the fridge cover basically acts as the corner of my bed. tidy.

Here's the frame after I transferred it to the new floor/drawer system I fitted. It sits in the same place as the original. The original piece of board was wider so that the complete frame was supported by that board. Here it partially supported by the set of drawers I bought off this forum and made a new panel to fit between the drawers and the side of the car.

Here`s mine, removed the middle rear seat, and banged it in there, it fits perfectly, and whats more you can access it whilst driving.

Just secured with a ratchet strap front and rear with a block of woof under the front to keep it level.
