						SupporterHi All,
Noticed an odd grinding/clicking noise that appeared then disappeared whilst driving back home at the start of a 300k trip last night. After stopping a few times but being unable to find anything under the car I got home (very late). This afternoon I pulled one of the rear wheel hubs down (as I couldn't think of anything else), only to find only one of the two bearings and a bunch of rollers. I can't make out any of the bearing numbers on the remaining one and I'll need to get a set.
I can't get 'em through Repco and I'm not keen on another set of French Landrover bearings so can someone give me some bearing part numbers that a local bearing supplier might have?
I also noticed a thread where someone mentioned that instead of putting in a new oil seal behind the rear bearing, that instead one should use a double lipped oil seal (Corteco P/N 15510067 or Rover P/N RTC3511 <A>).
Is this suitable for my model or should I just stick with a standard replacement?
TIA and I'm now wondering how the 3 other wheels are!
Cheers, Pete'

Hi Pete,
Just replaced the fronts bearings made by Timken (new made in the USA the old made in France) the LR part no is RTC3429 (check though).
Same as the Defender and front and back.

						Hi pete,
I have just replaced all 4 oil seals on my 93 Disco with the double lipped ones as the originals can't seem to keep the diff oil out of the bearings. Which says to me that they don't work very well in the first place.

SupporterHi Weeds, One Iota and Martin,
Thanx for the tips guys, I'll pop on down to Central Coast Bearings who are my local bearing supplier and take your info' with me.
That you also mentioned to watch out for diff oil is a worry. There was only a fine film of it on the shaft and none in the hub. Probably should check that too eh?
Thanx again.
Cheers, Pete'
I've had French and US Timkens and they've all been fine.
and FWIW, the last time I bought wheel bearings, (4,1/2 years ago) my Landy dealer was cheaper than the local bearing service !!
A lot of people ( me included ) believe that oil lubricated bearings will last longer than greased ones. Grease can get pushed away from the rollers and will also trap water.can't seem to keep the diff oil out of the bearings.
LR ( in the 80s I think ) put a seal in the spindle to stop diff oil getting past the axle, into the hub, and out through the dodgy inner hub seal on to the brakes. They then greased the bearing and had fewer leaks in that area.
A common mod is to remove the axle seal so the bearings are oil fed, and fit the much better double lipped seal to the inner hub to slow the leak. As long as the area of the spindle that the seal runs on is smooth, you wont have any problems, for a while anyway.
Interestingly, my SIII had an oil catcher shaped into the rear drum brakes backing plate. This caught the oil leaking from the hub and diverter it away from the shoe's, and under the car. If you can fix it, hide it

No. Until recently, the Defender used a Salisbury rear diff, the Disco used a Rover diff.Originally Posted by weeds

Defenders built/assembled in South Africa had Rover rear diffs in lieu of the Salisbury from about 2003. Not sure about UK builds.Originally Posted by p38arover

						SupporterHi Xtreme,
Was it you that posted a mod on putting in a grease nipple to feed these bearings? If so, can you post a step by step so that I can do this while I have the hub off anyway?
Cheers, Pete'
