Gday Piddler,
I've done this and it didn't make any real improvement to performance in my opinion. It did make it louder though - the noise level I've gotten used to now. In short, I wouldn't bother personally.
Hi,
for those of you with a TD5 that have removed the centre muffler and replaced with a piece of 21/2" pipe I was wondering if you could anwser 2 questions.
A) Do you get a performance improvement?
How loud is it and is it worth the extra noise?
I am currently considering this please advise your experience.
Cheers
Piddler

Goes on higher gear with lower revs where could'n before: roundabouts, dirt roads, etc. Didn't notice any difference in fuel consumption. For me it's silently when idling, and more bass when accelerating but can't hear very well with closed windows. Did sound level tests and it less up to 4db inside, don't care about outside![]()
Subjectively engine breathes better, my personal feeling. Also better road clearance. I've done it for $50. Taken muffler sits in my shed as it is ready to be fitted back just in case. So if you going to do this mod try don't cut flanges from muffler. Front one I used from commodore, rear one had to make myself.

I did this last week. Cost me $100 including 4 spare mufflers (2nd hand) for our rally cars, so real cost was probably about $75.
Absolutely no difference in the exhaust noise. I was well disappointed!! You can hear the turbo whistling more clearly, but could not believe it when they started it up the first time, as I was expecting a lot more noise. It is no different in the cabin when driving either.
I still have the "final" little muffler attached, so maybe I need to remove this as well to make it rumble a bit more.
It picks up better from lower revs (1200-1800 range) but I don't think there is any difference above 2500 RPM. It's also a bit better to drive around the farm in low ratio. You don't need to rev it so much.
It's an OK mod for the money as long as your not expecting too much. Drops a few Kg off as well I suppose.
Cheers

I've done this too, i have noticed a slight improvement in responce on lower revs and the noise is not that noticable unless i have the window down![]()
I have been told it sounds sweat from behind though![]()
My fuel economy has improved but i put this down to the extra travelling we do now to and from work as it's mostly freeway stuff now and not 5min up the road and stop/start, so the engine has a chance to reach operating temp.
Got mine done for $64 from Midus at Bankstown.

Anyone know if the small "final" muffler is straight through or baffled?
I have been told that they are a straight though system but baffled as well similar to a motorcycle muffler, has something to do with disturbed air gives better preformance.Originally Posted by spudboy
