    Short journeys in a TD5

Do you think driving a manual Disco TD5 for short distances to and from work each day is enough to "choke or clog" the engine slightly? I drive 12 k's to work each morning reaching a top of 70k p/hour and then 12k's home and occisionaly my car runs a bit rougher than normal. Sometimes after a weekend of play in low range, things are back to normal agin and the power is good and engine seems to be running fine.
I am wondering if I am clogging the engine by driving it mundanly each day?

    All comments appreciated

Hi Mick, For the last 5 years from new I have used mine in traffic as a daily drive short trips stopping and starting every day under 10 k's. Only go to Sydney half hour freeway once every couple of months.

Runs smooth all the time. Only difference is my TD5 is Auto, but that should not make any difference.

Since my gf moved in I only regularly drive a 5km round trip every day. It affects fuel economy but the engine seems to be ok. I change oils every 10,000ks and still try to do a 100km round trip a couple of times a month.

You wont be doing any serious long term expensive damage but the brain will learn your driving technique and you will get some carboning on the injector tips. Not a big hassle, just take it for a nice run every fortnight or so say down the freeway to some other shopping center or movie theater then bring it back, 50k each way should do, so long as the engine spends say 5-10 minutes under mild load at normal operating temp.

By my rule of thumb a mild load for a TD5 is a Defender with say 250-300kg on board doing 110 with the aircon on on a flat road.

Pretty much what I was thinking could cause it to be sluggish every now and then. As a said, after a good flogging she normally comes good again. Perform best after towing for a while

Cheers and back to ringing her neck each time I drive her!!

Yes, I would have to agree.

Also glazing of the bores could become an issue,
