but believe me a belt is far better than one of these kits if things go pear shaped

Is there a gear kit out there so we can get rid of the timing belt altogether and have gears instead?? A bit noisier but less to worry about when your in the middle of nowhere !

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Justin has already said it...
Don't worry, the timing belts on these things are simple & reliable. Changing them is a simple DIY job too, it's just handy to have a couple of specialist tools.
If you are venturing off into the middle of nowhere, just take a spare with a spare set of push rods and a handful of rockers.

I now use the bearmach solid forged lip crank gear rather than the spot welded one. Many reports of the lip breaking away on the spot welded ones, such as this one taken from a 300tdi Disco.
Also the difflock sticky thread is still over in the good oil forum if anyone needs it.

no more rubber bands for me
Toyota 1HDT , belt and tensioner less than 20,000 klm since replacement, broke middle of a 3 month trip, = bent valves + holes in pistons , seized cam, for all I know probably a bent rod or two as well.
So happy that the Td5 does not use a timing belt.
When I changed my Disco timing belt, I'm pretty sure it was the factory belt and was up to 140,000kms.

What about a chain and sprocket kit like the td5?? Or am I just being stupid nowcarrying spare push rods, rockers and belt is all well and good but changing them knee deep in leech infested swamp with mozzies and probable night time sky with 2 whining kids and a ****ed off wife kinda doesn't sit well with me!

I think your being dramatic, just have the belt changed at 80k and no more than 100k by a GOOD LR mechanic and forget about it. Pat
Exactly, I don't think they are as bad as people make out, I am more annoyed at the steady decline in performance as the belt stretches and the timing retards...
80K change intervals, fit all the idler and tensioner, and an upgraded lower crank pulley too . the kit STC4096L has all this in it. Doesn't include a front crank seal, ERR4575, you will need that too. Like Pat says just change it on time and you shouldn't have any issues.
