    Possible TD5 headgasket failing

    Hi Guys
Im concerned my headgasket is leaking,or there is a problem with the radiator cap.
    The symptoms
Went to Perth wed, smelt coolant,no leaks,a few drops split ex the overflow,no radiator hose pressure.Kept smelling coolant,NOT NORMAL.
Its not loosing coolant,no oil in coolant,no water in oil.
Today,20min trip towing trailer, checked again as I could smell coolant.Top Radiator very tight, coolant down almost 2 inches,NOW FOR THE BAFFLE ME BIT.I released the cap a tiny bit to allow pressure out, blow me the coolant came back up the 2 inches and all pressure removed from hoses.Once vented removed cap,re-fitted and left motor running for 15 mins,no pressure build up.
Does this sound normal???? Can the radiator cap be faulty and holding too much pressure,or as I fear have I got the dreaded TD5 head gasket failure looming.
Could be a side issue, but power seems down and she is using a fair bit more fuel than normal

When the coolant changed or whatever, the TD5 from my experience gets air bubbles in it. You'll start with coolant at the correct level, the engine gets hot, the lines remain pressurised and the fluid level drops in the container. I can only assume the air bubble in the engine compresses with pressure which drops the fluid level. The air bubbles come out eventually and in my case at least, I put about another 2 litres of coolant into it. The air is all out now, and I've noticed that the coolant level today had increased instead!
    Cheers

The cap should hold 20psi. If your not loosing coolant then you are probably ok. Mine would pump the coolant out the cap. there was no mixing of fluids until the very end.

mine would blow coolant out of the overflow only when I drove it hard if I took it easy then no problems, the head gasket had started to go around #4 cly it was a small leak and was hard to spot,I checked everything else on mine before deciding to do the head the radiator cap was faulty on mine would not hold the full pressure,

Did the exhaust gas test I had bought a kit and did 5 tests 2 of the tests proved negative these were done after a short drive and not driving it hard, the 3 other test showed exhaust gas in the coolant and was done after driving it hard.

how many K's on your's?? mine was around the 160 000 km mark also when i did the head gasket also replaced the water pump the bearings were stuffed and replaced the thermostat as well and mine had the plastic dowels 1 was broken and the other had a kink in it replaced them with a steel dowels and if you do it yourself allow the whole weekend for the job

    Andy,
mine has done that since I bought it. Smell of coolant occasionaly but only using very minimal, about what I would have regarded as normal. Found a small drip out of one of the heater hoses, dripping onto the exhaust, causing occasional smell. Has taken me 2 years to find it.

    Hi Stevo
214000ks,no idea if the previous owner had the head done/dowels changed.
The coolant smell is new, never done before. And yes,in the trip to and from I did give her plenty of right boot, there were lots of roadtrains to pass.
I think I should arrange to do it before it fails.
BlackBetty you must be a good girl for at least 2 weeks and then you may cop a headjob .
    Hi Craig
definately spitting the odd bit of coolant out of the overflow, never done it before, never noticed the hoses pumped up as hard either.
    THANKS GUYS,keep the advice flowing.

These days its not a matter of topping it up & drive away. Have you had a look at the handbook procedure?

The water passages are designed for quick warmup, at the expense of inconvenience when topping up. Its a rigmorale getting the air out.

I had the exact same thing after I had the coolant changed. Coolant droped after month in bottle topped it up 3 months later has not used a drop of coolant.
